ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Big Dan’s Car Wash has announced the opening of its first location in Albany.
The car wash is located at 375 N. Slappey Blvd., the wash will offer free washes for several days during its grand opening.
This is the first location in southwest Georgia, and company officials noted that several other sites in South Georgia are in development. The Albany location is one of the largest, if not the largest, express car wash in South Georgia.
According to the release, the site boasts a 150′ tunnel, self-prep stations, and 30 vacuums.
Big Dans is open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and it offers customers numerous free amenities, including air fresheners, microfiber towels, vacuums with wide and narrow heads, compressed air to clean tight spaces, glass and interior cleaners, mat cleaners, and mat washing stations.
According to Chief Operating Officer Tripp Flournoy, Albany resident and former local business owner of Pearlies Restaurant, Carl Young, has been hired as the operating partner for this location. “Carl’s work ethic, customer service background, and love of Albany made him the perfect choice to lead our Albany team,” said Flournoy.
To celebrate the opening of its Albany location, the company is offering reduced membership prices on its unlimited wash club packages. During the first month of operation, customers can join any unlimited wash club and pay just $5 monthly for the first three months.

The Albany Humane Society traveled nearly 1,200 miles to help a find dog a new home
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - There’s nothing stronger than the bond between a dog and its owner. Something that the Albany Humane Society is willing to drive the extra mile for.
“I literally feel like I got so lucky,” said Katie Joy. “I had no idea what I was getting myself into.”
Katie Joy lives in Saratoga, New York. After losing her dog unexpectedly during the 2023 summer, Katie decided it was time to find a new furry companion. In September, she stumbled upon the Albany Humane Society website and fell in love with a dog named King. So, she put in an inquiry for him.
“I got a phone call back like right away,” said Joy. “This really nice lady with a very deep accent, and I was like, ‘this is not Albany, New York.’”
It’s a mix-up that happens more than you’d think for the Albany Humane Society. However, their director, Payton Jarrell, tells WALB, that the mishap did not deter them from getting King to Katie.
“We got King to Katie through our transport program,” said Jarrell. “Just because we don’t have an adopter locally, doesn’t mean that we won’t try to make an adoption happen.”
How the transport program works is that the Humane Society partners with other rescues, typically in the northeast. From there, the rescue either picks up the animals from the humane society or drives the animals to the rescue themselves. The humane society had a transport heading to upstate New York and sent King for the nearly 1,200-mile ride to meet Katie. It was love at first sight.
“I sat on the ground, and he came right over into my lap and curled up in my lap and just leaned into me,” said Joy. “And I was like ‘OK we’re going to be OK.’”
Not only was it a sigh of relief for Katie, but for King’s previous owner, Justin Sellers, who was forced to give him up due to hard times.
“I was ecstatic. I did not want to see my baby boy sitting in here,” said Sellers.
And how is King doing now?
“I think he’s happy,” said Joy.

‘Rock for a Miracle’ is set to take place Saturday, November 11th at 3 p.m. at Chehaw Park
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - If you’re looking to have some fun in the sun on Saturday, Nov. 11, listen up! A South Georgia non-profit that provides outdoor access for those with disabilities will be holding its first annual benefit concert, “Rock for a Miracle,” at Chehaw Park in Albany.
The benefit concert will help people, like Josh, be able to do what he loves most: hunt.
Over 20 years ago, Josh was in a motor vehicle accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Before his injury, Josh would go hunting pretty regularly. Now at 38 years old, he has only been hunting once since his accident. That was until he heard about Miracle in the Woods.
“It’s very personal to me, because y’all are all about helping people with disabilities enjoy hunting,” said Josh. “And it’s a lifelong dream for me come true.”
The Miracle in the Woods Foundation is a non-profit that started in 2022. It gives people with special needs, disabilities and military veterans the chance to participate in the outdoors, to go hunting and fishing. It’s 100 % free of charge.
Jamie Kiep is the executive director of the Miracle in the Woods Foundation. He tells WALB he started the foundation for two reasons.
“It’s something that I feel like God put on my heart to do,” said Kiep. “And having a son with special needs and disabilities, our heart is there for people with special needs and disabilities. And being an outdoorsman myself and having someone with special needs, we know the financial burden of that, and we want to make that light and non-existent for those that want to get in the outdoors, and we want to make it possible.”
One of Josh’s disabilities is that he has partial paralysis on his left side. Miracle in the Woods Foundation provided a handicap-accessible ground blind to make the hunt possible. Kiep tells WALB that without it, Josh wouldn’t be able to hunt.
“It’s something that we take for granted every day,” said Kiep. “That we can go out in the woods whenever we please, but most of these folks need assistance. And they just enjoy being there.”
And 100% of the proceeds from the ‘Rock for a Miracle’ concert will go directly to making these adventures in the outdoors possible. The event kicks off at 3 pm on Saturday, Nov. 11 from Chehaw Park in Albany.

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Starting a business in a small town has challenges, but what about the success rate?
According to reports, Albany is ranked number one for starting a business in Georgia.
“Albany is just such a beautiful place with a rich, beautiful culture. They have a beautiful downtown, it’s like a blank canvas. So, it gives you the opportunity to create, so that’s why we chose this place,” Stanley Franklin, owner of Cornerstone Coffee, said.
Statistics state Georgia ranks in the top 20 percent to start a small business. Many business owners say that having more foot traffic will increase sales.
Corner Stone Coffee Co-Owner Anastasia Franklin says coming back to Albany has been a good move for her business. The coffee shop is located downtown.
“When you get out of the place that you are from and you see more, you are able to bring back things to your community and really offer something great,” Franklin said.
With a population of 70,000, an outside source ranked Albany number one for starting a small business. That report encompasses all factors including business costs, business climate, financial accessibility, economy and workforce.
The Perfect Collar has been open for only a few months now off of Ledo Road. The owner says building relationships with the people in Albany has been the best part of the opening process.
“We opened in May, we’re still brand new. The wonderful thing about this area is the community support. So, we have had a lot of support from our church family, from our friends, from other business owners it’s really been incredible,” Shellie Collier, owner of The Perfect Collar, said.
“You have to be willing to talk with people, you have to be willing to collaborate. You just don’t up and do by yourself. There is a lot of working with city leaders and community officials,” Franklin said.
Even though statistics say that Georgia ranks in the top 20% to start a small business, the 2022 economic outlook from the University of Georgia indicates the opposite. It states that Albany is behind the pace of the entire state.
Some of the resources that the city offers to new businesses include assistance from the downtown manager’s office and grant funding, but staying relevant in the community is mostly up to the business owner.
“In a town like Albany, it’s important to focus on building strong relationships with the local community and all of your customers. Recommend engage in community events, support various local causes, and that helps foster a loyal customer base,” Don Gray, immediate past chairman for Albany Chamber of Commerce, said.
A part of the process that surprised one business owner during their opening was the amount of time and effort it took to get up and going.
“We didn’t know how long and tedious the process would actually be. We wish we would have been able to plan better our opening date planning ahead because we didn’t know until we were in the middle of it,” Collier said.
Another aspect that can help businesses thrive in Albany is being open to change and help from others.
“I think the main thing is to continuously adapt to changing needs and preferences. Explore any other opportunities you might have to collaborate with other local businesses. Don’t try to do it with yourself, when one business succeeds it should help other businesses succeed,” Gray said.
