Greensboro-based Cone Health will add several services – including urgent care, primary care and imaging – to its planned cancer center in Asheboro at a cost of $72 million.
Hospital officials held a “construction kickoff” event Thursday for the expansive building that will be called the Cone Health MedCenter Asheboro.
Hospital officials expect to open the MedCenter in November 2024. It will be the health network’s sixth facility using the MedCenter concept. Construction of the new MedCenter also comes at a time of expected growth for Randolph County. Toyota expects to employ about 2,100 workers when it opens a battery facility in Liberty in early 2025.
“This community will need more medical appointments, more urgent care and more exceptional health and wellness services,” says Cone Health President and CEO Dr. Mary Jo Cagle. “Cone Health has been part of Randolph County for decades. Adding a MedCenter will help meet the needs for this growing community for decades to come.”
The MedCenter is designed to bring combine health and wellness services in one place. A patient can have a doctor’s appointment, then walk down the hall for a blood test or ultrasound rather than having to drive elsewhere. The 51,500-square-foot MedCenter will also have a pharmacy. It will be located on a 60-acre site west of Interstate 74, south of Spero Road.
Chicago-based architectural firm Perkins and Will, which has an office in Charlotte, will design the building. Birmingham, Alabama-based Robins and Morton, which also has an office in Charlotte, is the general contractor.
“We have had many discussions with the people who live near the location,” says Cone Health Oncology Services Randolph County Market Lead Skip Hislop in a statement released by Cone Health. “They too, want to see high-quality health care close-by. And they want it to fit in and be part of the community. Our design will honor that.”
Cone Health and Randolph Health were partners in a cancer center at Randolph Hospital for more than 25 years. That partnership ended when Los Angeles-based American Healthcare Systems bought Randolph Health for $10.2 million in 2021.
As part of the unwinding of the agreement, Cone Health retained full ownership, but had to move the cancer center off the Randolph Hospital site.
Cone Health moved the medical oncology portion last year to Asheboro. Due to the nature of radiation oncology, it was agreed that portion of cancer services would remain at Randolph Health until a new facility was built. The new cancer center will again consolidate medical and radiation cancer services.

ASHEBORO, N.C. — A community is coming together to support the Burroughs family after they lost everything in a fire in Asheboro on Dec. 8.
Chevy, 10, was sent to the hospital with 2nd and 3rd-degree burns from head to toe.
The fire started in the back of the family's home. Kevin and Shauna Burroughs, along with their 15-year-old daughter Kamdyn woke up to their son Chevy screaming from his room.
"My brother (Kevin Burroughs) was trying to crawl down the hall. He has burns on his hands and knees and the top of his feet from trying to crawl down the hall. He couldn't get to him that way, so he had to come out to where we are now and bang a hole through the wall," said Ken Burroughs, the brother of Kevin Burroughs.
Family friend, Wally Wilson said Kevin knocked through many layers to get to his son from outside the home.
"Went through vinyl, siding, plywood, studs, sheetrock, everything, and the hole he knocked was right there where Chevy was and pulled his boy out. The mother (Shauna) actually knocked the window out. That's actually right here behind me, to pull their 15-year-old daughter out the window," Wilson explained.
Chevy, wasn't breathing so his dad performed CPR until he was revived.
The 10-year-old was flown to Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem.
After being on a ventilator for the last few days, Chevy received his first surgery Tuesday morning as the family weighs heavily on community support and their faith to get them through this traumatic time.
"God works in a storm and this is definitely a storm in their life for them to get through this. It's going to take a lot of prayer, a lot of help, and people supporting them and so far it's been awesome," Ken Burroughs said.
Family and friends said Chevy enjoys sports and video games and loves his family to pieces.
The road to recovery for Chevy is going to be long and hard.
At this time we do not know what started the fire but were told the family had no health insurance, and now they have no home.
Kevin Burroughs is described as a dad who loves his family. Friends said Kevin has a big heart and is always willing to help someone in need. Family friends said Kevin did receive severe burns to his hands and knees because of the fire.
His wife, Shauna Burroughs is described as being a devoted mother, always there for her family.
Their 15-year-old daughter, Kamdyn is said to be quiet but loves her friends. Friends said she did receive cuts climbing out the window but is recovering well.
The family is staying at the hospital with Chevy for the time being.
As for Chevy, we were told that he is alert enough to ask about his cat, "Nubs" which was spotted near the home Tuesday morning.
A Facebook page was created to update the community on Chevy’s recovery.

ASHEBORO, N.C. — Four people were injured in a head-on crash on NC-49 in Asheboro around 7 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, according to North Carolina State Troopers.
Tracy Bryant Hill, 35, was driving northeast while William Davis Duvall, 45, was driving southwest on NC-49 near Oak Hollow Drive.
According to troopers, Hill drove across the centerline and crashed with Duvall head-on.
Hill and a passenger from Duvall's car were airlifted to a hospital. Duvall and another passenger from his car were taken to a local hospital, according to troopers.
Hill was charged with carless and reckless driving.
The crash site was closed for three hours for investigation.
