The harvest season has begun, and amid some recent challenges, farmers are asking for help from the heavens this season.
Glades Lives Matter, an advocacy group defending the interests of Glades communities, joined with area ministers for an event dubbed the Pre-Harvest Prayer Gathering.
Statewide, the agriculture industry has been heavily impacted by storms in recent years. In the Glades specfically, ministers are asking for support from the community to help ensure local farmers have a successful harvest season.
“Glades’ farmers feed America and are a vital part of our local communities, and we as a community should pray for their safety and a bountiful harvest,” said Pastor Albert Polk of South Bay’s Miracle by Faith Revival Center.
The ministers gathered Friday at Tanner Park in South Bay to host the event. Harvest season began this Sunday, Oct. 1. That date kicks off much agriculture activity in the region as some crops begin being harvested and planting activities for other crops also begin.
“Our farmers are some of the hardest workers and nicest people you will ever meet,” said Pastor Benjamin Escorcia Sr. of Iglesia de Dios Pentecostal Church in Clewiston.
“They grow safe and nourishing food crops for your family and for my family and they help our local schools and community organizations in so many ways. I believe they deserve our support, our prayers, and our thanks.”
Glades Lives Matter “develops and advocates for policies, regulations, and programs to secure and improve the community, stimulate the economy, and improve and protect the environment and natural resources,” according to the group. The organization and the ministers on hand also rejected recent criticisms of the local farming community and its practices, which the farmers have vehemently pushed back against.
“For decades, outside interests have worked to divide the Glades farming communities. So, we want to take this time to come together and pray for strength, grace, and unity,” said Pastor Robert Reese of First St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Belle Glade.

Morris didn't leave high school with a state title, running into Hollywood's Chaminade-Madonna before punching the ticket to state, but his defense still has the bragging rights of holding the Lions to their closest region final game since establishing their role as a resident powerhouse in 2017.
That 9-4 season, the four-star recorded 89 tackles — 25 for loss — five sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and returned a touchdown on a blocked punt.
Along the way, the highly touted prospect and No. 22 defensive end in the country flipped his commitment from Florida State, where his father, Mike Morris Sr., played on the O-line. Morris also picked up a number of varsity accolades, including multiple Super 11 and first-team all-county selections from The Palm Beach Post.
At Michigan, he didn't see game action until he was a sophomore. Across four years, Morris made just 16 starts in 27 games. However, in his junior and senior years, the Wolverines saw Morris unleashed, eager to hit the field after playing behind the 2022 draft's second overall pick Aidan Hutchinson and second-round selection David Ojabo.
Two College Football Playoff appearances later, seeing even a glimpse of Morris' full potential was certainly worth the wait.
In 2021, he played in all 14 games. Highlighting the year with a quarterback hurry against Georgia in the Orange Bowl, Morris made 17 tackles, had two pass breakups, and one interception.
Morris exploded in 2022 with 23 tackles — 11 for loss — a team-high 7.5 sacks, four quarterback hurries, three PBUs, one forced fumble and a blocked kick to earn his third varsity letter. His last collegiate appearance in December's Fiesta Bowl against TCU was marked by a tipped-off pass and two solo tackles.
American Heritage-Delray Athletic Director Kristina Shahin tweeted: "It couldn't have happened to a better guy!! Let's go kid!!"

BELLE GLADE, Fla. — Florida Crystals Corp.'s rice mill is converting sunlight to renewable energy from a 900-panel solar array and the first Tesla Megapack battery in Florida in a goal for its operations to become carbon neutral, the company announced Wednesday.
The sugarcane company already was powering 80% by renewable energy, which includes its agricultural and industrial operations as well as its corporate offices and fleet. Florida Crystals rotates sugarcane, rice and vegetables on 190,000 acres in western Palm Beach County.
Florida Crystals uses its biomass as fuel to generate the clean, green energy that powers its operations.
The Tesla Megapack battery is at its Sem Chi Rice Mill in Belle Glade. The company owns to rice mills.
“Our solar project is an amazing complement to how Florida Crystals is already powered,” Andy Sauber, senior director of sustainability, said. “The majority of the power for our operations already comes from the sun because our main fuel source is our own sugarcane fiber, which grows by converting and storing energy from sunlight. This new investment at our rice mill is literally making us even more solar-powered than we already are, but instead of storing the energy in our plants, we are utilizing a Tesla Megapack battery.”
The solar panels provide power to the rice mill and charge the battery during the day, and the battery then supplies power to the rice mill after dark.
“The solar panels, and particularly the Tesla battery, provide reliable electricity throughout the day and night, ensuring continuous operation of the mill and the protection of our staple food products no matter what Mother Nature has in store,” Sauber said.
This first phase of the solar project will power one of the rice mill’s two electrical meters and supply approximately 20% of the total energy needs estimated to reduce carbon by 250 tons annually.
The rice mill supplies 90 million pounds of locally grown rice each year – enough to feed more than 4 million people annually.
The end of the rice harvest season, when storage silos are at full capacity, coincides with the peak hurricane season, when there is a much higher likelihood of power shortages.
The Megapack eliminates the needs for industrial-sized diesel generators.

Dallas-based MV Transportation will conduct mass layoffs on April 30, according to a WARN notice posted on the Florida Department of Commerce's website. Most of the jobs listed for permanent layoffs are drivers, but there are also managers, road supervisors, clerks, mechanics and utility personnel.

The reason for the layoffs is that the Palm Beach County Commission hasn't approved a new contract for MV Transportation, or any other service provider, for Palm Tran Connection, a WARN notice written by Christina Pereira, MV Transportation's senior director of human resources, states.
"As a result, even though no final decision has been made, because the company cannot be confident of continuing business after April 30, 2024, the company will have no choice but to conduct a layoff at its locations in West Palm Beach and Belle Glade," Pereira wrote.
MV Transportation will lay off 187 of its employees working at its West Palm Beach facility at 3301 Electronics Way. Called Technology Place, the 141,186-square-foot was built in 1963. Space available for lease is listed on LoopNet.com for $9.25 per square foot. La Boheme Properties Inc. paid $5 million for the warehouse building in September 2014.
Another 31 employees will be cut from MV Transportation's facility at 190 U.S. Highway 2 N in South Bay. The location includes a small Post Office building and 38,098 square feet of land that was acquired by MA Investments Group Inc. for $110,000 in May 2015.
Under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, companies are required to provide notice of plant closings and mass layoffs to state and local officials. In Florida, companies are expected to provide notice of a plant closing and mass layoffs 60 calendar days in advance.
Founded in 1975, MV Transportation provides on-demand, reservation-based paratransit services for more than 200 city and county governments across the U.S., according to the company's website.
Palm Tran Connection is a shared ride, door-to-door transportation service for disabled residents and visitors in Palm Beach County. It is a division of Palm Tran, Palm Beach County's public transportation department.

No executive director was listed on Palm Tran's website. Clinton B. Forbes, Palm Tran's executive director since 2015, died Nov. 7 at the age of 55, hours after he made a presentation to the Palm Beach Gardens City Council.
Palm Beach County and MV Transportation did not return inquiries for comment at deadline.
