May announced Sunday he’d accepted the head coach position at the University of Michigan, ending the most successful tenure in program history.
Under May, the Owls went 126-69 in six seasons and made a historic run to the Final Four in 2023, unseen heights by the program's traditional standards.
The search for May's replacement is underway as athletic director Brian White attempts to continue the upward trajectory of FAU men's basketball program.

Here's a look at six potential candidates for the next FAU men's basketball head coach:
Rob Lanier
Lanier led SMU to a 20-win season and the NIT in his second year with the Mustangs but was fired last week in a move that surprised many in college basketball’s national media.
FAU is familiar with Lanier: The Owls defeated his SMU team 80-70 in an AAC matchup on Feb. 22 in Boca Raton.
Lanier is also likely to draw recommendations from White's family connections in collegiate athletics.
His older brother Danny White is the athletic director at Tennessee, where Lanier served as an assistant under current head coach Rick Barnes from 2015-19.
Bucky McMillan
"Bucky Ball" in Boca Raton?
Samford won hearts with a determined comeback against Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks that fell just short after a controversial late no-call in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
McMillan, 40, has been on a meteoric rise through the coaching ranks in recent years.
He was head coach at Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham from 2008-2020 before leading the Bulldogs to three straight 20-win seasons from 2022-24.
If McMillan, a Birmingham native, is ready to step out of his hometown, he could seek to emulate the program-building success which vaulted May into the upper echelon of college basketball.
Donnie Jones
Few potential replacements have the Sunshine State experience of Stetson's head coach.
The Hatters enjoyed a historic 2023-24 season with 22 wins, an Atlantic Sun championship and the first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
Jones, 57, was an assistant at the University of Florida under legendary head coach Billy Donovan from 1996-2007, helping the Gators to back-to-back national titles with his recruiting prowess.
While his time as UCF head coach (2010-2016) was largely unspectacular, Jones did lead the program in its transition from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference. FAU will be entering its second season in the AAC next fall.
Erik Pastrana
White and FAU struck gold in 2018 by hiring May, who was then a young assistant on Mike White's coaching staff at Florida with no Division I head coaching experience.
Should Brian White choose to follow a similar recipe, he could pluck Erik Pastrana from his older brother's current staff at the University of Georgia.
Pastrana has experience in Boca Raton as he served as an assistant in May’s first season with the Owls. He helped recruit Michael Forrest, the program's all-time leading 3-point shooter, to Boca Raton.
A Miami native with Cuban heritage, Pastrana would be a South Florida hire and a good candidate to connect with the school's local community, an important priority for fundraising in the NIL era.

Akeem Miskdeen
Miskdeen is another Georgia assistant coach who checks a lot of boxes FAU might look for in its next head coach.
He was an assistant coach under May at FAU from 2018-21 and helped recruit Owls star Johnell Davis to Boca Raton. He also served as FAU's acting head coach for two games in 2020-21 with May sidelined due to health and safety protocols.
With 13 years of collegiate experience, including Power 5 stops at Florida and Georgia under White, Miskdeen might just be ready for his first Division I head coaching opportunity.
It's a not so small bonus that he's invested in the program May built at FAU and publicly supported the Owls during their historic NCAA Tournament run.
“I won’t rock any FAU gear,” Miskdeen said of supporting FAU at the 2023 Final Four. “I can’t be on TV rocking FAU gear when we’re trying to get some players for Georgia. I’ll be a little animated, but I’ll have to calm myself down because I’ll have to remember that I work for the University of Georgia.”
Antonio Reynolds-Dean
Reynolds-Dean would continue the theme of plundering White's coaching staff at Georgia. He currently serves as White's associate head coach with the Bulldogs.
A former player at Rhode Island and professionally overseas, Reynolds-Dean has steadily climbed the coaching ranks since his playing career ended in 2008 with stints at Rhode Island, College of Charleston and Clemson.
Reynolds-Dean also holds coaching experience under reigning national champion head coach Dan Hurley of UConn. He served as an assistant under Hurley at Rhode Island for two seasons.
At age 47 – the same as May – Reynolds-Dean may be ready for his first Division I head coaching opportunity.

BOCA RATON, Fla. — After six seasons at Florida Atlantic, Dusty May has been hired by the University of Michigan to fill its men's basketball head-coaching vacancy for a five-year contract worth about $3.75 million annually.
The Big Ten Conference school made the official announcement on Sunday, including contract terms, and he will be introduced during a news conference this week in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He replaces former Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard, who was fired after five seasons with the Wolverines. Howard went 82-67 with two NCAA tournament appearances, but the Wolverines went 8-24 this season — the school's worst record since 1960-61.
Late Saturday, Michigan President Santa Ono, in a social media post, announced the hiring.
"For almost two decades, Dusty May's proven track record as a winner, including Florida Atlantic's magical run to a 2023 Final Four, speaks volumes about him and his coaching," Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said. "We are so delighted to welcome Dusty, and his family, to the University of Michigan. He embodies the values of high integrity and outstanding character, coupled with an unparalleled understanding of the game of basketball."
May released the following statement Sunday:
"This has been a thrilling journey at Florida Atlantic University and it is incredibly bittersweet to share my decision to accept the head coaching position at the University of Michigan. I love everything about this great institution in Boca Raton."I am so proud of what we were able to accomplish here, together, with our fans and alumni, but most importantly our players and staff. These guys gave us everything they had and they will forever be family to me. Each one of them made me a better coach. A lifetime of FAU fans will remember these guys and the memories they created."Florida Atlantic is in great hands. I am grateful that Brian White hired me six years ago as a first-time head coach. He trusted me at every turn, and I'm so thankful for his guidance, friendship and tireless efforts in support of the Owls. I am also thankful for the leadership of President Stacy Volnick, and I know she and Brian will continue to keep Florida Atlantic headed in the right direction."I am also so appreciative of the support from our passionate fans and donors and will miss it greatly. May guided the Owls to consecutive NCAA tournament berths, a Final Four appearance last year and a 77-65 loss to Northwestern in the first round Friday in Brooklyn.
Florida Atlantic was 126-69 in May's tenure, including a 60-13 over the past two years — the third most wins nationally during that span.
May has posted a winning record in each of his six seasons in Boca Raton and reached the postseason four times.
He was hired by White on March 22, 2018.

Michigan will pay FAU a $1 million buyout for hiring May while under contract.
May, who will more than triple his salary at Michigan, agreed to a 10-year contract after last season worth $15.7 million with $1.25 million this season and was set to increase by 5% annually until 2033.
Almost the entire roster returned as Florida Atlantic moved from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference. The Owls finished the regular season 25-9 overall, 14-4 in the AAC and received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
May previously spent three years as an assistant coach at the University of Florida. He followed then-Florida head coach Mike White, Brian's brother, from Louisiana Tech to Gainesville.
The native of Peoria, Illinois, was a student manager for the Indiana University men's basketball team under legendary coach Bob Knight, also a Big Ten school. After graduating, he began his professional career as an administrative assistant/video coordinator at Southern California from 2000-02.
He returned to Indiana in an administrative role for three seasons.
May and his wife, Anna, have three sons, Jack (guard on the Florida men's basketball team), Charlie (guard on the UCF men's basketball team) and Eli.
"Dusty's successes on the court and his wonderful personality off the court exemplified Florida Atlantic's values," interim President Stacy Volnick said. "Furthermore, what his and the team's performances have done to elevate, not only the basketball program but the entire university's profile, cannot be understated. While I am sad to see Dusty leave, I sincerely wish him well."

BOCA RATON (CBS12 NEWS) — The University of Michigan made it official on Sunday morning, announcing the men's basketball team has hired Dusty May as their 18th head coach, ending May's six season run at Florida Atlantic University. May received a five-year deal with an average $3.75 million per season.
It's a huge blow for the FAU Basketball team, coming just two days after the Owls were knocked out of the NCAA Tournament in the first round by the Northwestern Wildcats, another Big Ten team.
Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel released a statement that read, "for almost two decades Dusty May's proven track record as a winner, including Florida Atlantic's magical run to a 2023 Final Four, speaks volumes about him and his coaching. We are so delighted to welcome Dusty, and his family, to the University of Michigan. He embodies the values of high integrity and outstanding character, coupled with an unparalleled understanding of the game of basketball."
May's first ever head coaching job was at Florida Atlantic, where he famously led the Owls on a magical run to the Final Four last season, and was a buzzer beater shy of playing their way to the National Championship game. He's coached the Owls to 60 wins over the past two seasons, one of only three D1 programs to pull that off, and leaves FAU with a 126-69 overall record.
"In addition to his historic level of competitive success, Dusty built a world-class culture within our men's basketball program," said FAU Athletic Director Brian White in a statement. "Operating with a high level of integrity and representing our university and athletics department with dignity and class. I am genuinely happy for Dusty, his wife Anna and their children Jack, Charlie and Eli, who have been so important to the Boca Raton community over their six years here in Paradise and will forever be FAU family."
Dusty May calls the decision "Bitter-sweet", and released a statement detailing his emotions and reflections.
"This has been a thrilling journey at Florida Atlantic University and it is incredibly bittersweet to share my decision to accept the head coaching position at the University of Michigan. I love everything about this great institution in Boca Raton.
"I am so proud of what we were able to accomplish here, together, with our fans and alumni, but most importantly our players and staff. These guys gave us everything they had and they will forever be family to me. Each one of them made me a better coach. A lifetime of FAU fans will remember these guys and the memories they created.
"Florida Atlantic is in great hands. I am grateful that Brian White hired me six years ago as a first-time head coach. He trusted me at every turn, and I'm so thankful for his guidance, friendship and tireless efforts in support of the Owls. I am also thankful for the leadership of President Stacy Volnick, and I know she and Brian will continue to keep Florida Atlantic headed in the right direction.

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Dusty May is going to Michigan, returning to his Big Ten roots and leaving Florida Atlantic after six seasons highlighted by a Final Four run that thrust him into the national spotlight a year ago.
Michigan President Santa Ono, in a social media post, announced the hiring on Saturday night. May and the Wolverines were in the process of finalizing details of what was expected to be a five-year contract, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Michigan had yet to announce the terms of the deal.
“I am thrilled to welcome Dusty May to the University of Michigan as our new head basketball coach,” Ono wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
ESPN first reported the agreement.
May will replace Juwan Howard, a former Michigan star who was fired after five seasons with the Wolverines. Howard went 82-67 with two NCAA tournament appearances, but the Wolverines went 8-24 this season — the school’s worst record since 1960-61.
Barely 24 hours after FAU’s season was done, Michigan put its turnaround task in May’s hands.
The speculation about May’s future started long before now — it really has been a constant for more than a year. He was touted as a rising coaching candidate last season after a 20-game win streak thrust FAU into the national spotlight for the first time. And then the NCAA run to the Final Four, where the Owls were a bounce away from making it to the national championship game against Connecticut, only further validated the sense that May was ready for the biggest of big time.
FAU did what it could last year to keep May, signing him shortly after the Final Four run to a 10-year extension. He earned $1.25 million in base salary this season, plus another $25,000 for making the NCAA tournament. FAU is due a $1 million buyout now that May has decided to leave.
May got questions about his future for the last several weeks, including when FAU lost to Northwestern on Friday in the first round of the NCAA tourney. His stance never wavered: His plan was to listen to those who called, then decide what was best.
And Michigan evidently made him the offer that he couldn’t decline.
“College basketball is very fluid. Just click on Twitter to see,” May said after FAU’s loss on Friday in the tournament. “No idea what’s next for anybody in our locker room. I love it at FAU. I love coaching these guys, and that’s it.”
May went 126-69 in his six years at Florida Atlantic, finishing with winning records in each of those seasons — and seeing the victories really pile up in the last two years. The Owls went 35-4 last season on their way to the Final Four and finished this season at 25-9.
That’s 60 wins in the last two years; entering this weekend, the only Division I men’s programs with more victories in that span were Houston (64) and defending national champion UConn (63). And FAU’s home record in that stretch of 30-1 tied Drake for the best at the Division I men’s level, with all those games being sellouts in Boca Raton — such a hot ticket that students would line up for hours to get into some of those contests, something that the school hadn’t seen before.
Countless “firsts” in FAU basketball history came on May’s watch, such as first NCAA Tournament win, first 25-win season, first AP Top 25 appearance, first Final Four. FAU had exactly one season with 20 wins before May came along; the Owls have three now, after he was able to lure big-time talent to Boca Raton and play in a 3,000-seat arena that doubles as the practice court, a place where the orange paint is chipped off many of the rims and without many of the amenities that top programs can boast.
Put another way: May had more winning seasons at FAU (six) than the school had in its first 25 years of Division I play before he arrived combined (five).
FAU was May’s first stop as a head coach. He was previously an assistant at Florida, Louisiana Tech, UAB, Murray State and Eastern Michigan, started his coaching career as an administrative assistant and video coordinator at USC — and before all that, graduated from Indiana where he was a manager under Bob Knight.
And now he goes back to the Big Ten, only in maize and blue.
