Montana’s season came to an end Monday afternoon in Daytona Beach at the Ro College Basketball Invitational. The No. 5 Grizzlies fell 74-61 to No. 4 Arkansas State in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
The Grizzlies conclude the year 24-12, the most wins in five years and tied for the seventh-most in program history. The Grizzlies also won their first postseason game since 2006 on Sunday in Daytona, and reached the Big Sky Championship game for the first time since 2019.
“If you would have told me before the year started that we would win 24 games, I would have told you we probably hung a banner given the schedule that we drew and the expectations for some of the teams in our conference,” Montana 10th-year head coach Travis DeCuire said. “In all honesty, I’d trade you a couple of those wins for a couple specific wins on a couple specific nights.
“But I will say this, I have a high-level of respect for the young men in my program. I think this is probably the most selfless team I’ve ever had and been around in terms of guys being willing to let others step up when it’s not their night. The way that they celebrate each other. It’s just hard in this day in time with the way that athletics is going at every level to come across this many young men that are committed to the success of others and it’s been a pleasure to have this group.”
Montana was a long way from home and a long way back in the game on Monday as a hot first half gave Arkansas State a 21-point lead at halftime. But the Grizzlies had a massive response in the second half and fought hard to keep the season alive.
They would get back within seven points a couple of times in the final minutes, but the comeback attempt came up short as a Red Wolves basket in the final seconds led to a 13-point loss.
Laolu Oke led Montana with 15 points and eight rebounds in another gutsy performance from the forward in his final collegiate game. Oke ends his college career with 961 points and 990 rebounds.
Josh Vazquez was Montana’s second leading scorer with 12 points. Vazquez will end his decorated Grizzly career as the Big Sky’s all-time leader in games played and also Montana’s program record holder for career free throw percentage (.911). He scored 992 career points as a Grizzly, coming up excruciatingly short of joining the 1,000-point club.
“We wanted it for him. We had talked about it as a staff before the tournament started and we thought if we could get to the semifinals, he could get to 1,000, and that’s the type of young man that you want to see have that type of accolade walking away,” DeCuire said. “But he’s been a pleasure to have, we’re going to miss him, and I’m happy that he’s got the record for games played. The program will miss him, the community will miss him, and maybe we will try to find a way to keep him around.”
Griz senior Aanen Moody hit a pull-up jumper to get it back to seven at 66-59. The Red Wolves clearly took notes from Montana’s win on Sunday, where Moody scored 34 points, and did everything in their power to limit his attempts. He finished the game with just four points.
The Grizzlies remained in it going into the final minute of the game, but Arkansas State would shut them down on offense and end the game on a 5-0 run for the 74-61 victory.
Montana outshot Arkansas State 46-39 percent and really cleaned up the ball control in the second half, turning it over just three times. They outscored the Red Wolves 38-32 in the final period and it would have been a larger margin if not for the late free throws.
The Griz also limited Arkansas State to zero three pointers in the second half after eight in the opening frame, and held them to just 36.7 percent shooting. But in the end, the deficit proved too much to overcome.
“Just not enough juice. I thought we got off to a good start the first three minutes, then they got into us a bit defensively. I think it just took us too long to respond to their aggression defensively,” DeCuire said. “We came out in the second half and played very well, good enough to win, but it was just too big of a hole.”
Montana will lose plenty of players from this year’s team as all five starters are seniors. Brandon Whitney has another year of eligibility if he chooses to use it, but four players have played their final games in Grizzly uniforms.
There is a lot of excitement around the program still, as players like Henderson and Jones, along with Te’Jon Sawyer, who came off the bench for seven second-half points and nine overall on Monday, should return. The Grizzlies will get back several more key players from this year’s 24-win team, including freshman sensation Money Williams.
“I think we’re returning a really good nucleus of guys that are talented enough to win a championship,” DeCuire said. “Now it’s about getting the right pieces to play with them.”

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Beach safety teams along the coast of Central Florida are waving the red flag warning that surf and rip currents are extremely strong, and the conditions are expected to stick around through the Spring Break week and Easter weekend.
In Volusia County, lifeguards told News 6 they have already made close to 80 rescues in March.
“Once you get out there far enough, it really pulls you down and it takes you for a tow,” said beachgoer Caden Roseberry.
Even for people who consider themselves strong swimmers, the surf and currents can be a major challenge.

Volusia Beach Safety teams want to warn beachgoers before they go in the water to check their signs at beach parks where they post the conditions each day.
“We have these at every major park and parking area in Volusia County beaches. First, I’m going to have the high tide and low tide,” said Captain AJ Miller.
Miller said the biggest section to pay attention to are the flags and the meaning of their colors. A red flag signifies high hazards in the ocean.
“Right now, we’re dealing with heavier surf, and I would bet by the end of the weekend when that surf subsides, we’ll probably keep flying red because we’ll have rip currents popping off,” Miller said.
Around this time of year, Miller said they see the final winter-like storms roll through and they create the rough conditions.
“Right now, this heavier surf is punching holes in the sand bar and that’s what’s going to create those rip currents,” Miller said.
On top of the surf and currents, the high tides are pushing even higher this week and Volusia Beach Safety said that means they cannot allow cars on the beach. Those conditions are expected to stick around through the weekend, too.

Where can I see a rocket launch in Volusia County, Florida?
Watching a rocket launch or waiting for that launch window while at the beach is a pretty Florida thing to do.
In Volusia County, immediately north of Brevard County — home to Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station — you can get a great view of a SpaceX, NASA or United Launch Alliance rocket launch.
The best views to watch a rocket launch from here is along the beach. Look due south. Readers have also mentioned seeing a rocket launch from New Smyrna Beach, Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach. Here are some recommended spots:
• South New Smyrna Beach (Canaveral National Seashore), there may be parking costs. New Smyrna Beach features 17 miles of white sandy beaches. An electic and quaint beach town, despite its reputation as the "Shark Bite Capital of the World," New Smyrna Beach has always been a haven for surfers who come for the waves.

• Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park, 6656 S. Atlantic Ave., New Smyrna Beach. Bethune Beach, which is 3.5 miles south of New Smyrna Beach and one mile north of the Apollo Beach entrance to Canaveral National Seashore Park, has restrooms, picnic pavilions, showers and nearly 800 feet of beachfront sidewalk, according to Volusia County's site. The nearby riverside park area is across South Atlantic Avenue with tennis courts, pickle ball courts, basketball and volleyball courts, playground, fishing pier and restrooms. The river by the park can be a great viewing spot for manatees, dolphins and pelicans.
• Apollo Beach at Canaveral National Seashore (south of New Smyrna Beach). Canaveral National Seashore runs along Florida's East Coast in Volusia County and Brevard County. To access Apollo Beach, take Interstate 95 to exit 249, then travel east until it turns into State Road A1A. Follow SR A1A south to the park entrance.
• Oak Hill riverfront is the southernmost city in South Volusia County.

• Jimmie Vann Sunrise Park, 275 River Road, Oak Hill. This location has about 350 feet of beautifully restored shoreline, according to the city of Oak Hill online. Facilities include pavilion, picnic tables and kayak launching facilities.
• A.C. Delbert Dewees Municipal Pier, 243 River Road, Oak Hill. Facilities include a520-foot observation pier with two covered decks and seating, the city of Oak Hill site states.
• Bird Observation Pier on River Road across from A.C. Delbert Municipal Pier (see above). Facilities include a 100-foot observation pier.

Attorney General Ashley Moody, Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood warn against drugs
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Florida officials on Tuesday issued a spring break warning in Daytona Beach to help reduce the number of overdoses and crack down on drug use.
Attorney General Ashley Moody, Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood and Volusia Recovery Alliance Executive Director Karen Chrapek spoke during a news conference Tuesday.
“This spring break in Florida can create a lasting lifetime memory in a positive way. We also know that because millions will come to Florida, whether it’s seeking a break from scholastic studies or seeking a break from the harsh weather up north, they will come here and we know because of that and so many coming here, we lead the nation for those who overdose while on vacation,” Moody said. “And that is a stat we want to change.”
Moody said that many equate spring break with drug use and “we have got to stop that because we now know that so many illicit substances contain a lethal dose of fentanyl.”
She said seven out of 10 pills seized by the DEA contained a lethal dose of fentanyl.
“This is what kids are getting off the internet they’re getting from their friends at school. Many times they think it’s Adderall or Xanax, things that are prescribed or illicit, but they may not believe have fentanyl, they’re taking them from their friends and many children, young adults are dying,” Moody said.
Chitwood urged parents to children about the dangers of purchasing these drugs, especially during spring break.
“They think they’re buying this stuff off the street or they’re buying it from a classmate, therefore it’s good stuff. In reality it’s laced with fentanyl. We saw we had the kid from recently from Lake County, Polk County, armed with a gun 75 grams of marijuana, selling it on the beach to spring breakers. The very next day, the first car stop we make is an adult on the beach with trafficking amounts of meth inside of the car,” he said. “What was he here for? They’re here to sell to the kids and that stuff that they’re buying on the street is laced with fentanyl.”
The crackdown comes days after a fatal shooting in Jacksonville Beach and after a teen pulled a gun in a crowd of spring breakers at New Smyrna Beach.
According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, deputies were patrolling an area of the beach near Flagler Avenue when they heard a crowd yelling and some people began shouting, “He has a gun!”
Body-camera video shows deputies run toward 16-year-old Lakeland Felixander Solis-Guzman wielding a handgun.
“They observed our desperado pointing a gun at another individual,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood told News 6. “He then looks up and sees the deputies and takes a long run along the water’s edge.”
Then, on St. Patrick’s Day, three shootings happened in Jacksonville Beach, killing one person and injuring three others.
