Francis Lott, one of the chief architects of Douglas-Coffee County’s unprecedented economic boom that began in the late 1970s and continues to this day, has passed away after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was 87 years old.
It is difficult to put into words the impact Lott has made on this community. There hasn’t been a more prominent figure in Coffee County since the end of World War II than Francis Lott. Rural communities, particularly those in the Deep South, have always faced challenges, some of them seemingly insurmountable. Lott, along with a dedicated team of like-minded citizens, set out to make Douglas the exception rather than the rule. Their perseverance, ingenuity, creativity, and tireless work put Douglas and Coffee County on the statewide radar. He initiated a wave of economic prosperity for this community that Coffee County continues to ride.
Lott, a Douglas native who had been living on Amelia Island, Florida, for the last several years, graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in architecture. After graduation, he served five years as an officer in the Air Force before returning to Douglas, where he joined Lott Builders Supply Company.
After nearly 20 years at Lott Builders, Lott formed Lott Properties Inc. and branched out into real estate development. Lott Properties grew into a successful and lucrative venture for Lott.
While he was building his career in Douglas, Lott became involved in local economic development efforts and remained a key figure in business and industry recruitment for the remainder of his life.
In the late 1970s, Lott championed a spec building for the purpose of bringing industry to Douglas. The gamble paid off and eventually, the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce commissioned three more spec buildings to attract more opportunities to the community. During his career, Lott has developed everything from apartments to shopping centers, subdivisions, self-storage buildings, and more.
Lott has also been generous with his financial resources. In 2004, he established the local Economic Development Fund with a $1 million endowment to the Community Foundation of Coffee County. He also bought the old Belk building in downtown Douglas in 1998. Six years later, he did a complete renovation on the building, turning what was once an eyesore for downtown into one of the most striking buildings in Douglas. He renamed the building The Atrium and, in 2014, he gave the building to the Chamber of Commerce.
Lott and his wife, Diane, have endowed a $500,000 scholarship, dubbed the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Scholarship, to provide a debt-free education at Georgia Tech to students who could not afford to attend. Coffee County students are given priority when awarding these scholarships.
He received numerous awards and accolades over the course of his career, including the Dean Griffin Community Service Award (2018) from Georgia Tech, the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Georgia Economic Developers Association (one of only two people to receive that honor), and the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce’s Garland Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award (2019). Lott has served on a number of boards and authorities, including chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, the Community Foundation of Coffee County, and Wiregrass Georgia Technical College Foundation. He was also a founding member of Douglas National Bank, a locally owned and operated bank in Coffee County that has grown into one of the most successful financial institutions in the community.
Lott spent over four decades helping transform his beloved community from a sleepy farming county into a lesson in economic opportunity that cities and towns across the state have attempted to emulate. All told, Lott has been responsible, either directly or indirectly, for creating nearly 4,000 jobs locally and providing a pathway to prosperity for thousands of people throughout the area.
Lott leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Diane; son, Jeffrey Lott and wife Joanne; son, Kirby Lott; daughter, Mary Jane Brady and husband Mike; step-daughter, Allyson Reeves Land and husband Ronnie; grandchildren, Andrew Lott, Paige Lott, Jack Brady, and Mary Kate Brady; and great-grandchildren Kirby Lott and Scarlett Lott. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) - A South Georgia church is helping families in need by supplying baby necessities through a donation drive. They are calling it “The Baby Bank.”
After noticing there were no crisis pregnancy clinics for families in Douglas, Kassi Margeson, The Baby Banks ministry leader, decided to create her own. With the help of other women in Southview Church of God, they give baby essentials to whoever needs them.
She told WALB the passion began when she was 18.
“I think the closest one is in Tifton, and so, I don’t have any medical degrees or anything, and so, I was like so what is the next best thing that I can do, and it was just supplying the needs to the moms,” Margeson said.
The price of baby essentials has increased drastically nationwide over the past two years. Statistics show the average cost for baby necessities like health care, clothing and food is around $9,000 to $20,000 a year, per child.
Hannah Beauchamp, a mother of two, told WALB there’s been a huge price difference from when her 6-year-old was born.
“Prices went up a lot, I know the big box of diapers used to be maybe $25 and now they are almost like $39 to $40,” Beauchamp said.
Douglas has a population of about 11,000 people with only two to three stores where families can get baby necessities.
Beauchamp says her son has a mass on his liver, so he requires a special type of formula and it’s a hassle trying to find it locally. She told WALB she spends about $250 to $300 a month just on baby necessities.
“Being that Coffee County is so little, there is so many people going to the WIC office. We have to get our state-funded to us now and they have to deliver it,” Beauchamp said.
Margeson says they are accepting anything you think a child will need.
Pick-up is every first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Melissa and Bobby Guess opened Revive Hydration and Functional Health in Douglas in 2023 with hopes of offering a new approach to health and wellness. Bobby, a long time ER nurse and Nurse Practitioner, and Melissa, who was a dental assistant for 19 years, had some very pivotal times in their life when health was of the highest importance to their family.
About 7 years ago, their daughter was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease. Melissa states they went through several different doctors, specialists, and tests but nothing seemed to help. Their daughter stayed sick. About a year later, they found a functional medicine doctor in Utah that completely changed their perspective on helping their daughter get better.

On Tuesday, July 18, 2023, the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand opening of Downtown Douglas’s newest restaurant, Hardware House. Hardware House is locally owned and operated by Garrett and Kacey Spivey, and was formerly known as Spivey’s Catfish House. Hardware House is located at 310 S. Peterson Ave. in Douglas.
A little history on the new restaurant — Hardware House is located in what used to be Lott’s True Value Hardware, Inc.; and prior to Lott's, it was known as Power’s Hardware. When local developer David Varnedore purchased the building a few years ago, he made plans to house a sit-down restaurant on the first floor. Meanwhile, the Spiveys owned and operated Spivey’s Catfish House, a Douglas staple, that they purchased from the Peterson family in 2016.
Fast-forward seven years, and Varnedore’s vision was perfect for what Garrett and Kacey had brewing in their minds for their latest restaurant concept. Combining both tradition and history, the Spiveys are proud to introduce Hardware House to the community.
“I was born and raised in Coffee County. My family has been serving up good food here for over 50 years. Kacey moved here in middle school with her mother, and we now live on our farm in Ware County. Our boys still attend school here, and Douglas will always be home,” says Garrett.
When asked about their vision for opening Hardware House, Garrett stated, “We are thrilled to introduce everyone to the Hardware House. I have always felt that Douglas didn't have enough nice, sit-down restaurants, especially on Sundays. The Hardware House is sure to have something for everyone, whether it's a Friday night steak-dinner, drinks with friends on Saturday, or a big southern style lunch buffet with my Papa Holt's famous fried chicken.”
With a large crowd in attendance, Garrett and Kacey, along with their two boys, Landon and Grayson, proudly cut the ribbon in front of their new hometown restaurant.

The sun was shining on a delightful morning as the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the highly anticipated opening of PetSmart. The event brought together a jubilant crowd, including a furry guest of honor, Bailey the golden doodle, who couldn't contain her excitement for the pet paradise now gracing the community.
The Chamber of Commerce’s Member Relations Director, Chelsea Preston, warmly welcomed the enthusiastic attendees and extended her heartfelt congratulations to PetSmart for officially becoming an integral part of the beloved local community. The event was brimming with joy as an array of speakers took the stage to share in the celebration.
Pastor Rueben Speight of Greater Destiny International Ministries blessed the establishment with an inspiring invocation, setting the tone for a prosperous journey ahead. Mayor Tony Paulk, with his affection for pets shining through, extended a warm welcome to PetSmart, accompanied by a charming anecdote about his personal bond with his furry companions.
City Manager Charlie Davis captured the excitement that had swept through the community, expressing the town's long-awaited anticipation for the opening of PetSmart. Dr. Tracy McClelland, Chair of the Chamber of Commerce, warmly welcomed PetSmart on behalf of the Chamber and expressed gratitude for their investment in the community and their collaboration with the Chamber.
Trevor Smith, the Store Manager of the Douglas PetSmart location and a new resident of the community, beamed with enthusiasm as he welcomed all present to explore the store's splendid offerings. The brand-new store boasts a sprawling expanse of over 15,500 square feet, showcasing an extensive array of products catering to cats, dogs, fish, birds, reptiles, and small pets.
“In addition to our grand opening event this upcoming Saturday, I wanted to host a ribbon cutting in conjunction with the Chamber in order to express our appreciation to Douglas and Coffee County for being so welcoming, and to begin fostering relationships with citizens in the community,” stated Smith.
