Common Types of Big Rig Truck Insurance in East Point, GA
At Independence Insurance Agency, we offer several types of insurance coverage for local, intermediate, and long-haul trucking needs. Here are just a few categories of trucking insurance coverage that our agency offers.
As the foundation of your insurance policy, liability coverage is required by law in most states in the U.S. It provides coverage for damage or injuries caused to properties or other people if your 18-wheeler is responsible for the crash. Without liability coverage, it's almost impossible to drive a truck or run a trucking business without major legal consequences.
Having physical damage coverage is an essential component that shouldn't be overlooked. This insurance is responsible for covering the expenses related to repairing or replacing your truck in situations such as accidents, theft, vandalism, and other damaging events. By having this coverage, you can rest assured that your business won't be affected significantly by unexpected incidents, and you can continue running your operations smoothly even in challenging times.
For trucking companies, the goods they transport are crucial to their operations. To protect these goods from damage, loss, or theft while in transit, cargo insurance is essential. This coverage provides much-needed peace of mind for both you and your clients, allowing you to reimburse clients for any losses sustained while protecting your reputation and brand identity.
Non-Trucking Liability Insurance is designed to cover property damage or bodily injury that may occur during personal time when the driver/truck is not under dispatch. This coverage can be applied with or without a trailer and is added to a commercial policy as an endorsement.
While Independence Insurance Agency has built a reputation of excellence in serving the needs of truckers, we also offer general liability. Also known as Truckers General Liability, this coverage insures for bodily injuries or property damage that happen due to business activities that are NOT the cause of operating a truck. It covers accidents that occur in parking lots, rest stops, also while loading or unloading. General liability can also cover losses related to theft and vandalism. Most brokers and shippers will require this coverage to work with you.
Bobtail insurance is a type of coverage that is comparable to non-trucking liability, which is designed to offer protection when driving a truck without a trailer attached. This is commonly referred to as "bobtailing." With bobtail insurance, the tractor is covered at all times, even when it is not attached to a trailer, regardless of whether or not the truck is under dispatch.
Trailer interchange insurance is a must-have if you're involved in a trailer interchange agreement. This essential coverage offers protection for trailers owned by other parties that you're using under a contractual agreement. It covers damages caused by collisions, fire, theft, and vandalism, providing assurance to all parties involved.

Early voting has started Friday in East Point and at least 4 people Fernandes spoke to had bad ballots.
Signage on polling locations was placed, telling voters to check their ballots carefully.
East Point City Councilman Joshua Butler voted early on Mallalieu Methodist Church and said the poll workers here were helpful.
“The good thing is that we’re trying to correct the problems,” Butler said. “The first thing they did was give me instructions to look at my ballot and when I saw my ballot I noticed that there was an error and they worked very hard to correct the error for me.”
Butler is an elected official who knows exactly who should be on the ballot, but not every voter is equally informed.
Another voter told Fernandes he cast his ballot at the College Park Library, where he said poll workers gave him the wrong ballot.
He said the poll worker wouldn’t let him vote in the right district, so he reported to his city council member.
Fernandes called the Secretary of State’s Office they said this wasn’t their mistake. Fulton County is responsible for looking over the ballots before approving them to be printed.
A Fulton County spokesperson sent Fernandes a statement saying some boundary lines were changed in East Point, but there was some variance from the final boundary lines adopted.
Butler said these errors are now being corrected.

EAST POINT, Ga. - Fulton County and East Point City leaders are warning voters in East Point to double-check their ballots to make sure they have the right one before casting it due to voters getting the wrong ballots.
"Unfortunately, our voters are going to have to be a little bit more diligent about what Ward they're in and who they vote for," said current East Point City Council Member Joshua Butler IV.
"It's really unfortunate that this happened…everyone deserves to have an easy voting process," said Carrie Ziegler candidate for East Point City Council Ward B.
She says when early voting started, she got calls from voters in her ward who said she wasn’t on their ballot.
"They are getting the wrong ballot. They're getting the ballot from the ward that they used to live in," Ziegler said.
"This should not be happening. It really should not be happening," said candidate for City Council Ward C and former Mayor Earnestine Pittman.
She says she got similar calls from voters in her ward, including from one voter who told her she had to go back and forth with poll workers for over an hour before they would give her the ballot for the correct ward she lived in.
"She stayed there an hour and a half, and they finally found that she was indeed in Ward C," Pittman said.
Even Butler, who legally has to reside in Ward D, got the ballot for a Ward he doesn’t live in now.
"Unfortunately, even I as a council person had an error," he said.
He says the city redrew its ward map this year based on the most up-to-date census numbers.
And Fulton County, who administers the city’s elections, told us the city gave them ward boundary lines that didn’t match the new official boundaries adopted by the city council.
We asked city officials about this error, but they didn’t respond as of Friday night.
"We’re working very hard to correct those errors," Butler said.
Poll workers have now put signs on the doors of polling places warning voters to not cast their ballot if it is not the one that matches the ward they live in but to alert Poll workers who will get them the correct ballot.
"Check your ballot to make sure you are voting in the correct ward," Butler said.
"We don't want people to cast their ballot in the wrong ward and then have that be an issue where they're not able to redo their ballot," Ziegler said.
FOX 5 did talk to one voter who said that happened to him and his wife and who is now wondering whether their ballots will be counted.
Early voting runs until Nov. 3 and Election Day is on Nov. 7.
Here is Fulton County’s full statement regarding the ballot issues:
Fulton County Department of Registration & Elections is aware of some boundary line issues with the City of East Point's Council Ward assignments. After review, it has been determined that redistricting changes that were submitted and approved by the city had some variance from the final boundary lines adopted. Upon discovery, corrective measures were put in place to advise voters of their correct City Ward. City of East Point voters are asked to please review their ballot before casting their vote. Based on participation in early voting for this election, we do not expect this issue to affect the outcome of any elections.

Channel 2′s Michael Doudna was live near the facility Monday on WSB Tonight at 11 p.m.
The location was a hospital for years serving South Fulton County below I-20.
“It’s very important to have that,” said Barbara Cummings, a long-time East Point resident.
In 2022, WellStar replaced the hospital and emergency room at Atlanta Medical Center South with urgent care.
“Now, they are going to close everything, but the people are still here,” said Cummings.
Cummings’ concern, shared by members of the council, is that thousands of South Fulton County Residents will be miles away from a nearby emergency room.
“They just don’t care about the people in East Point, as far as I’m concerned,” Cummings said
“Imagine having a car accident south of I-20 at 5 pm on Friday. You may not make it to Grady,” said East Point Councilman Joshua Butler IV.
Around 10:50 p.m., the council passed a moratorium that would prevent almost any construction or repurposing of the property.
“The idea is we protect healthcare here in East Point by making sure that the property is not rezoned or resold for any use other than a hospital,” Butler IV said.
The councilman said in the meeting it would take around $200 million to make the hospital able to operate.
He supports a hospital authority to go and seek money from Wall Street.
“When you have people in the community who care about the healthcare, they find solutions to problems,” said Butler IV.

EAST POINT, Ga. - East Point has fired its city manager months after the city lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in an email phishing scam.
The city announced its decision to let Deron King go earlier this week.
While East Point officials did not provide an exact reason for the move, a statement from City Councilmember and Mayor pro tem Karen Rene said the decision "was not taken lightly."
"The phishing scam that cost our city over $700 thousand was a serious breach of trust. It is important to remember that the City Council has a fiduciary responsibility to protect the taxpayers’ money. We cannot and will not tolerate any action that puts our city’s financial security at risk," Rene said.
In July, an audit report was presented to the council that showed the city had lost $1,219,287 in an email scam in 2021.

East Point taxpayers want city manager gone
Some East Point taxpayers say their current city manager, Deron King, has got to go after an audit revealed the city lost more than $700,000 in an email scam. Some residents say King kept it under wraps for more than two years.
According to the report, scammers hacked city employees’ email accounts through a phishing email.
The hackers then sent four fake invoices from city email addresses asking for the funds to be wired to a fake company.
The city was able to recover about $434,197 from the fourth wire transfer when they finally caught on to what was happening.
But they still lost $785,090 from their general fund.
Dozens of taxpayers pushed for the city to fire King after he failed to inform the City Council or the public about the loss.
King said staff didn’t tell the council because it was under investigation by the FBI and they weren't sure how much they could share.
Rene said the city hopes to focus "on healing and rebuilding trust."
"We are committed to working with the community to ensure that something like this never happens again," she said. We are also committed to finding a new City Manager who will lead our city with integrity and transparency."
Jeffrey Reeves will serve as interim city manager.

EAST POINT, Ga. — Wellstar's East Point urgent care center will close next month, the healthcare operator announced Tuesday, fully shuttering the old Atlanta Medical Center South hospital.
The old hospital's emergency room closed last year, and the facility was repurposed as an urgent care center. Wellstar will now close the facility entirely on Jan. 12. In a release the healthcare operator said it is "committed to a thoughtful process to determine the future" of the site.
Wellstar also said it will invest $5 million over five years to help expand the neighboring Southside Medical Center East Point clinic.
A joint release also added that Southside, starting the first week of January, will "expand its urgent care hours of operation to seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., for all patients regardless of insurance status or ability to pay." Wellstar said following a partnership with Southside offering more preventive care and management of chronic conditions, its urgent care facility had seen patient volume drop 65% to roughly 28 patients a day by November.
"People who previously received urgent care services at Wellstar EPHC will have access to a greater range of services at Southside Medical Center's East Point clinic, which is located next door. In addition to urgent care, patients can receive primary care, pediatric care, dental care, OB/GYN services and immunizations at Southside’s East Point facility and support like mental health care services virtually," the release said. "Patients can also access substance abuse support and other specialty care like podiatry, basic optometry and urology at the main Southside Medical Center clinic location, located at 1046 Ridge Avenue, less than 10 minutes away from the East Point clinic."
Wellstar said healthcare workers at the East Point urgent care facility will be offered positions at other Wellstar locations. The two healthcare operators also said their HR departments would work together to offer Southside opportunities to any Wellstar employees who wish to remain in East Point.
