EDENTON, N.C. — The Herringbone is a part of history in Edenton, North Carolina. And as it transformed into a restaurant, the owners knew they wanted to keep that history intact.

"Keeping in the spirit of our town, we decided to restore it and do it in a way that really is a shoutout to the history of this area. So, everything in here is about Northeastern North Carolina," said owner Joe Wach.

When you walk through The Herringbone, you can see pieces of history and pieces of Edenton hanging on the walls, used in the decor, and even tables and light fixtures. Wach said this spot became more of a community project as more and more people brought items in to help bring the spot to life.

"We made it kind of into a little museum as much as a restaurant and a place where people can kind of come and gather and just really enjoy the history."

Take in the sights and the history, as well as the food. Chef Kyle Murphy was hired for his precision and dedication to his craft, which shows in each dish served. Everything is fresh and incredible. Even a simple wedge salad is perfect and flavorful.

Wach says they also have a big surprise that brings so much to the area, "We have a really, really cool, wood-fired pizza oven," he smiled.

Yes, artisan pizza, served straight to your table from the oven. They have pies like Margherita. They also serve unique toppings like prosciutto pear, which is incredible. The most popular is the Spicy Sausage. Our team tried them all, and each was incredible with big flavor.

Then, when all is said and done grab a dessert created to perfection by their pastry chef, Bekah. "She makes amazing, amazing desserts," said Wach. He wasn't lying.

They are not only beautiful desserts to look at, but they taste better than they look. Which is saying something, because they are little pieces of art.

For The Herringbone, caring about their craft is a big deal. "It really is a community space. A place we consider not just ours, but a place for the community," said Wach. They hope to be a spot for the community and visitors for years to come.

"If you've never been to Edenton, you got to come down and visit," Wach smiled.

EDENTON, N.C. — The Edenton Town Council on Tuesday approved the creation of a social district in the downtown area, where people can consume and carry alcohol openly.

The measure passed in a 4 to 2 vote following two months of deliberation, city officials wrote in a news release.

The town will roll out the district later this year, becoming the fourth town and fifth location in northeastern North Carolina to establish one, following Tarboro, Washington, Manteo and Corolla.

Within the district, people will be able to drink alcohol out in the open and carry their beverages from business to business along sidewalks and green spaces.

The district encompasses the east and west sides of South Broad Street from the intersection of Queen Street to the intersection of Water Street.

City officials also said a portion of West Water Street to The Herringbone Restaurant, a portion of East King Street to the intersection with Colonial Avenue, and a portion of West Eden Street are a part of the district.

Businesses within the district will use different kinds of stickers displayed on their window or door to identify if they're participating or not.

Green stickers represent businesses that can sell alcohol and will participate, yellow stickers represent businesses that don't sell alcohol but will still welcome people who carry alcohol, and red stickers will represent businesses not participating.

The district's hours will be 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

"We are seeking to preserve and enhance economic vitality in our historic downtown core, and the implementation of a social district may be one of the keys in doing so," Town Manager Corey Gooden wrote in a news release. "Town staff have worked tirelessly to ensure that all of the right boxes are checked and we are excited to see how this can attract new businesses to the Prettiest Small Town in the South while remaining respectful of local residents."

The Supreme Court of North Carolina will hold its October session of court at the Historic 1767 Chowan County Courthouse in Edenton on October 3 and 4. The Court will hear three cases on Monday and two cases on Tuesday.

Under state law, the Supreme Court can meet in only two other cities outside of Raleigh: Edenton and Morganton.

Not long ago, experts identified the oldest house in North Carolina thanks to dendrochronology. This home is over 300 years old!

History of North Carolina

Thousands of years ago approximately 30 Native American tribes lived in the North Carolina area, including the Cherokee, Catawba, Tuscarora, and Croatans, according to the North Carolina Secretary of State history page. The first few European colonies that attempted to settle in the area were unsuccessful.

One group of colonists settled on North Carolina’s Roanoke Island but were forced to return to England due to hardships. The second English colony at Roanoke disappeared, leaving behind the word “CROATOAN” found carved into a tree. Today the fate of The Lost Colony remains unknown.

Eventually, successful settlements were formed in the area. The first town, called Bath, was formed in 1705. The state’s second town, Edenton, was incorporated in 1722.

In 1774 the women of Edenton protested British rule by boycotting British imports in what became known as the Edonton Tea Party. Some people believe that in 1775 North Carolina became the first state to declare independence from Great Britain. North Carolina joined the Union as America’s 12th state in 1789.

In the 19th century, North Carolina earned the nickname the “Rip Van Winkle” state due to its slow progress. North Carolina left the Union in 1861 during the Civil War and was readmitted afterward in 1868.

In the early 20th century, the Wright Brothers made their first flight in North Carolina. Today the state is home to the Wright Brothers National Memorial. North Carolina is also known for its beautiful state parks and mountains.

Origin of the Lane House

The oldest house in North Carolina is the Lane House. It dates back to the year 1718 or 1719. Linda and Steve Lane purchased the historic home in 2009, according to the Edenton Historical Commission. At the time, the couple believed that the house dated back to the turn of the 20th century.

However, during renovations, it became clear that the home was much older. Restoration carpenter Wayne Griffin and expert cabinetmaker Don Jordan removed deteriorated 20th-century wall paneling. Below it they uncovered ceiling joints consistent with an 18th century construction date.

Steve and Linda Lane called in the Restoration Branch of the State Historic Preservation Office to learn more about the origins of their home. In a 2013 ceremony at the Lane’s house, dendrochronologist Michael Worthington announced that the home is in fact the oldest house in the state of North Carolina.

Worthington stated that “the felling date for the primary timbers used in this building is Winter 1718/19,” according to the Edenton Historical Commission.

Dendrochronology involves analyzing tree rings in order to date past events. According to Brittanica, many species of trees produce growth rings during their annual growing season.

The width of the rings varies, typically based on the amount of precipitation or prevailing temperatures. Not only can dendrochronology help date certain artifacts, but it can also help researchers understand an area’s climate, even thousands of years ago.

Since the discovery of 18th-century ceiling joints, researchers have been able to learn more about the original structure of the Lane House. The original home measured about 16’ x 25′.

The one-and-a-half-story building featured two rooms on the first floor and two in the attic. The home also featured two large exterior end chimneys.

The Lane House was extended in the mid-20th century, but questions about this historic building remain. For example, researchers aren’t sure if the upstairs “shed rooms” were constructed with the house or added later on.

Location

The Lane House is located in Edenton, North Carolina in Chowan County. Edenton is located in the eastern portion of North Carolina on Albemarle Sound. It has a population of 4,397 according to the 2020 United States census. Edenton is about an hour and a half drive from Virginia Beach.

Steve and Linda Lane own North Carolina’s oldest house, but visitors to Edenton can still get a taste of history by taking a trolley tour of the town. According to Go the Adventure Way, the tour lasts about an hour and takes visitors through the Cotton Mill and Mill Village as well as the major locations in the Historic District.

The outlet mentions learning the history of Harriet Jacobs, one of the heroes of the Underground Railroad, and visiting the Lane House and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the second oldest church in North Carolina.

Visitors can purchase tickets for the Historic Edenton Trolley Tour at the Penelope Barker House Welcome Center. Tickets are $12.50 for adults and $2.25 for children 6-11 years. Children under 6 are admitted free. The trolley runs Monday-Saturday and Sunday tours are available from April through November.

An alternative way to explore the area is via the Edenton Bay Cruises. The seasonal cruises teach visitors about Edenton and its history during a 45-minute beautiful trip around the bayside town. The boat is named Liber-tea, after the Edenton tea party in 1774.

Edenton is a great place to explore art and live music. Visit the Chowan Arts Council and Gallery Shop, which offers affordable works of art by local and regional artists for purchase. The town also hosts a farmer’s market with vendors selling local produce, baked goods, and more every Saturday.

There are several opportunities to experience live music in Edenton. The Red Barn at Rocky Hock Campground hosts bands performing classic country, bluegrass, and gospel music on Fridays. The venue also hosts events such as Halloween costume parties along with live music.

Edenton Fun Facts

Edenton is North Carolina’s second oldest town, incorporated in 1722. It is also the state’s first colonial capital. According to North Carolina Historic Sites, Edenton once offered slaves a means of escape via the Maritime Underground Railroad.

Additionally, the town is the site of the first political action by women in America’s history, known as the Edenton Tea Party. Other historic landmarks in the area include the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse, St. Paul’s Church, and the Cupola House, the second oldest building in the town.

EDENTON — Hurricane Isabel was one of the most destructive storms in the area’s history. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Category 2 storm felled thousands of trees, resulted in massive power outages and caused “unusually high storm surge” after making landfall on the North Carolina coast on Sept. 18, 2003.

Area residents will get a chance to remember Isabel’s devastating impact when the town of Edenton hosts a free screening of a locally produced documentary film marking the storm’s 20th anniversary next month at the Taylor Theater.

The 71-minute film, titled “Isabel 20,” was produced by the town of Edenton’s public information office over six months using 10 hours of archival film and 300 photographs. It traces the hurricane’s path and aftermath. Isabel was the strongest storm to strike the region since Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

The hurricane cut a swath from Hatteras and Ocracoke Island through the Inner Banks of North Carolina and up through the Tidewater regions of Virginia and Maryland.

The storm surge from Isabel topped seven feet, flooding homes and businesses in historic downtown Edenton. Winds reached 100 mph, downing 60% of the town’s tree cover. The storm remains Edenton’s costliest recorded natural disaster.

The movie covers the lead-up to the storm, its impacts, aftermath, and recovery efforts. Interviews about the storm were conducted with 20 residents and local leaders.

Edenton’s Public Information Officer Tyler Newman said the movie, which will be screened at Edenton’s Taylor Theater Dec. 14, is a unique opportunity for locals.

“This is a groundbreaking event for Edenton as we debut our first ever ‘community film’ — one that reflects upon such a game-changing disaster for our area,” he said. “Everyone has an Isabel story, so we encourage the public, particularly Chowan County and northeastern North Carolina residents, to make an effort to come out and watch the film, which has become a wonderful oral history project.”

Newman credited Edenton Purchasing Agent Bud Powell for his help with the project and for providing equipment to produce the film.

Seating for the 5:15 p.m. showing will be limited, so attendees are encouraged to show up early. Seating will be first come, first serve, Newman said. Cameras will not be allowed in the theater. Concessions will be available.
