GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — New Year’s traditions are, well, as old as measured time itself. But this New Year’s Eve, along with the mark of a new year, Greeneville will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its annual New Year’s Eve party, Midnight on Main.
The town will celebrate a decade of memories, activities and more starting at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31, on Main Street and Depot Street — all with a rockin’ theme.
“This year, we’re inspired by the renewed beauty of Depot Street, dynamic entertainment and a palette of vibrant metallic colors,” said Christina Potts, Greeneville’s media and marketing specialist, in an emailed statement. “We proudly present our theme: ‘Rock ’n’ Radiance!’ Get ready for a night of retro glam that reaches all ages and gives a glimpse of the dazzling possibilities of 2024.”
To get the party started, the first 100 guests can choose between free metallic hats, tiaras and noisemakers at the intersection of Main and Depot streets. Eventgoers are also encouraged to visit the resolution station. Then the crescendo of the night comes with a ball drop filled with the resolutions of attendees, followed by a breathtaking rooftop fireworks show at the stroke of midnight.
But before then, Greeneville will offer a slew of New Year’s Eve activities and festivities.
Parents can bring their children to the Kids’ Zone at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall on Main Street. There you can enjoy the game room, music, dancing and a small bounce house.
For those 21 years and older, the General Morgan Inn and Brumley’s will offer festivities from 8 p.m. until midnight. This ticketed event includes music by Ivy Road, DJ Robbie Britton on the Terrace, a midnight champagne toast and an array of delectable, heavy hors d’oeuvres.
There’s also the Street Party Extravaganza. Depot Street will transform into a musical showcase, featuring The Warman Trio from Townsend, Tennessee, serving up an exciting mix of ’50s and ’60s rock ’n’ roll in a rockabilly style. You can also enjoy the food court, including Top Dog Hot Dog Stand, Floyd’s Snack Shack and What the Fluff cotton candy.

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) – A new apartment complex is coming to Greeneville, and it’s the first one to be built in the area since 2014.
“Needless to say, we are deficient in apartment units in Greeneville,” said Randy Davenport, planning administrator for the Town of Greeneville. “Greeneville and Greene County have for several years been listed near the top of insufficient affordable housing.”
Davenport said the town wants to change that by providing more places to rent. He added that people coming to the area are buying land and building homes but for those who aren’t ready to be home-owners they need more rentals.
“We’ve been looking at the growth of our population. We’ve predicted that within the next five years we could add as many as 5,000 new residents,” Davenport said. “Right now, Greeneville is in about roughly 16,000 and we’re anticipating well over 20,000 in the next five years.”
The new apartment complex will consist of three buildings with both two and three-bedroom units. Developers also have plans to add a clubhouse, park, and other amenities.
“It’s not what people might sometimes refer to as government-subsidized housing, but it’s more upscale,” said Davenport. “The rents that they mentioned to us were very reasonable, we thought, compared to a lot of other rentals we’re hearing that people are charging.”
The complex will be located behind the new Shops at Greeneville development.
“It’s geared to young individuals, and small families that are just getting started,” Davenport said. “Because right now what we’re seeing is someone, fresh out of school, and they’re looking for a job.”
Jeff Taylor, CEO and president of the Greene County Partnership, said these new apartments could be a huge benefit for students graduating college.
“Student housing, apartment housing, again, there’s not that level of housing that affords that population,” Taylor said. “It could help them as well.”
Taylor told News Channel 11 that adding more housing in Greeneville is a plan for the future.
“We have had several developers looking to build entry-level housing, our goal is to try to communicate that we have a desire and demand for downtown,” said Taylor. “When you have the things that are going on downtown, it’s exciting.”
Davenport says that project developers have plans to start construction on the apartment complex in early 2024 with hopes to have it finished by the beginning of 2025.

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WCYB) — Twelve-year-old Kaden Gunter is described as funny, active and outgoing.
"Kaden is your typical 12-year-old, fun-loving, sport-playing, video-game-playing boy," said Kaden's Uncle Mark Laughlin.
"Kaden's never met somebody that's not a friend because everybody likes Kaden," said Greeneville Middle School principal Rachel Adams. "He just brings in a great presence to anywhere he is."
On Tuesday night, Kaden experienced a medical emergency at football practice.
"When there was an emergency that happened in a split second, they [EMS] jumped right into action, and there were no seconds lost," added Adams.
"No seconds lost mean saving Kaden's life."
According to Laughlin, Kaden is in critical, but stable condition. He has been transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for further medical treatment.
"God is our only hope in a time like this," said Laughlin. "At 12 years old, you don't expect for you to get that news."
On Wednesday evening, a prayer vigil was organized for Kaden. Members of the Greeneville community joined together to lift up his friends and family.
"To know that we have a support system not only here in Greeneville and Greene County but across Northeast Tennessee, it makes me feel proud to be from Northeast Tennessee to see just how one kid can bring an entire area together," said Laughlin.
"It's hard to say anything is perfect in a situation like this, but it was the perfect ending to a day where there has just been an incredible amount of support for not only Kaden and his family, but for our students and your staff who are also experiencing a lot of emotions and trying to understand what's going on," said Adams.
Adams said students and faculty are asked to wear Kaden's favorite color blue on Thursday. As for their home football game, donations will be made for Kaden's family.
"Our athletic director and head coach had an idea to see if we could take some of the proceeds from our gate costs to donate to the family because they are going to have some unexpected expenses with travel related to Kaden's emergency."
Officials with Volunteer High School also announced that a portion of all ticket sales for Friday night's game against Greeneville will be donated to the family for medical expenses.
"If I have one thing to say to the community it would be to rally around one another because you don't know when it could be your family," said Laughlin. "So hug your family, hold your family tight, and just support one another the best you can."

If you’re a high school basketball fan, then there are two times of the year that you look forward to the most. The obvious No. 1 time is the post season when all records go back to 0-0. As Oak Ridge head boy’s basketball coach Aaron Green says, the regular season is just scrimmage games to prepare for the post season because every team plays at least one game in the post season. Even a winless team in the regular season can win a State Title.

The second most fun time, in my opinion, is the Holiday Christmas Tournaments, which are upon us. Because I have been so blessed to follow Oak Ridge basketball for over 40 years, I have traveled to five different states and have witnessed over 200 Christmas Tournament games involving the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats. From Florida to Arizona and from Georgia to Ohio with Kentucky in the middle, we’ve been there. My crew and I have covered a lot of basketball, but despite all the travel, the best tournaments might just be right here in Tennessee. Beginning today, Dec, 26, at 7 p.m. both Oak Ridge teams are on the road to two of the most prestigious Christmas Tournaments in the South, if not the nation. Here in Tennessee.
Lady Wildcats travel to Greeneville
For the 24th time since 1989, the Lady Wildcats will be headed up to the Hal Henard Gym in Greeneville to participate in the Andrew Johnson Bank Ladies Classic. The tournament has had several names including the Burger Chef Ladies Classic as it was originally called in 1989, but the competition has remained the same, Excellent. There will be 20 teams representing five states all vying for a championship opportunity on the final day of the tournament on Dec. 30. The Lady Wildcats have won more championships than any other participating team in the tournament’s 32 years. Six different times the Lady Wildcats have been champions with the last coming in 2018.
The 6-3 Lady Wildcats will open up at 7 p.m. against the North Greene Lady Huskies and it willbe the 89th game that Oak Ridge has played at this tournament. Along with their six titles, they have been runner-up five times and have a 63-25 record. Some of the greatest legends of Oak Ridge basketball have been named MVP of this tournament, Tennessee Miss Basketball winners Erin McGinnis and Jennifer Wilson come to mind, along with Danielle Barnard, Angela Phillips, Brittany Frazier and most recently, Jada Guinn, were deemed the best players there. Oak Ridge Head Coach Paige Taylor was also MVP back in 1993 when her Bradley Central Lady Bears won the title. The local residents of Greene County consider this to be a community event and they pack out the gym every day of the tournament.
Wildcats play in Bristol
Speaking of packed out gyms, the Wildcats will be traveling up the road to another nationally known Christmas Tournament tonight (Dec. 26), the Arby’s Classic in Bristol. This tournament is played at Viking Hall and over 30,000 people will pay the price of admission to watch teams from eight different states, the District of Columbia and the Bahamas try to bring home a championship on Dec. 30. This is a by invitation only tournament that has been around for 40 years. The Wildcats will be participating in their 7th Arby’s Classic and are in pursuit of their first title.
Former Oak Ridge Head Coach Steve Shipley took the first Wildcat team there in 1988 with the last trip coming in 2017 under Aaron Green. Former Head Coach Chuck Carringer saw his 1999 Wildcats play for the title on Y2K eve, but lost in double overtime to Science Hill. Against national powerhouses, Oak Ridge has a 15-8 record at the Arby’s and one of our own, Isaac Merian, won one of the big events at the tournament, the slam dunk contest. Basketball at it’s best.
Oak Ridge will open up tonight at 7 p.m. against one of the coolest mascots we’ve ever played, the Black Bears of Harlan County, Kentucky. As the unofficial historian of the basketball program, I was curious to see if we had ever played them before. Low and behold, I thought we had in 1951 but come to find out that same county has an even cooler named team, The Green Dragons of Harlan, Kentucky. Historically that team has the distinction of being the first opponent of the Wildcats in what we now call the old gym in the current high school. The Green Dragons opened that facility on Dec. 7, 1951. I bet some other Dragons were green with envy on having not being invited to be the first. In fact we didn’t even play them that season. But I digress.
My crew will be on the road tonight in Bristol covering a South Carolina signee who plays at Harlan County in Trent Noah. A big time scorer and big time player. Although we’d like to be able to cover both boys and girls, it is impossible tonight since they begin at the same 7 p.m. start time. As is our policy, we cover the team farthest away from Oak Ridge and that is the Wildcats in Bristol. The good news is that the guys are off on Wednesday so we’ll be able to cover the Lady Wildcats in Greeneville in their second round game. Hopefully both teams will have start times moving forward that we can cover both on the same day. All of the tournament games that we cover will be on FM 92.7 and we’ll stream the live video on our YouTube Channel-Prepradio.

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) – A lawsuit has been filed against both the Greene County Planning Commission and the owners of the Presidential View RV Ranch.
Stephanie Hopson, a resident who lives near the new RV ranch, filed the lawsuit because she believes the property does not have the proper infrastructure for an RV campground. Hopson’s daughter, Sarah Bradley, said her mother thinks the project should be zoned under a different category than agriculture (A-1).
“She just thinks it’s improper to place this RV site in what’s zoned as A-1 farmland, for agricultural reasons. They are not a campground, they are an RV site, which is very different,” Bradley said. “The infrastructure in the area would not be able to support the large vehicles, campers, and RV’s that would be required to go down the main road that the campground is on, which is very narrow.”
Hopson believes that the Presidential View RV Ranch would cause issues for those who live in the area.
“Everyone in the surrounding area is very worried about the wind in the area,” said Bradley. “We already saw in January the problems it caused and there’s a lot of scrap metal shrapnel that will come off of these RVs and campers.”
The lawsuit was also filed against the Greene County Planning Commission for approving the site plan in the first place.
“The outcome we would like is maybe they don’t allow the RV site at all or if they do allow the RV site that they would be made to follow the guidelines properly,” Bradley said.
Glenn Merklin, owner of the Presidential View RV Ranch, argues that they are following the guidelines required for the project.
“We have our engineers working on everything as far as water goes, sewer goes, the engineers are doing above and beyond what we’re required to do,” Merklin said. “We are making sure our septic system is in line and that we have lots of land set aside for reserve fields.”
Merklin told News Channel 11 that he wants the RV ranch to benefit local farmers.
“We want to bring in agritourism, herb gardens, petting zoos, so that we can teach people about agricultural, farming, things like that,” Merklin said. “Hopefully we will be able to have an outlet for farmers to sell their goods, just trying to get local farm support.”
