Some people absolutely love Halloween – which, according to some studies, is the number one night of the year for random hookups among young people – while others think Halloween is clearly a satanic celebration. Then there are those who fall in between: They don’t think it’s the night of the devil, but they still don’t look forward to a bunch of random kids knocking on their door asking for treats.
However, mixed as the feelings may be, a new High Point University poll found that, across the state, the majority of people are celebrating Halloween this year.
Specifically, the poll found that 59 percent of North Carolinians polled plan to celebrate Halloween in 2024, while 36 percent say they’re going to take a pass. They won’t dress up, watch horror flicks with friends or pass out treats to kids.
The study also asked which candies and treats scored highest and which came in at the bottom of the list.
This year’s poll found that a significantly higher proportion of the population in the state will celebrate than last year. The High Point University Poll conducted last year on the same subject found that only 47 percent of North Carolinians would be celebrating Halloween.
The new 2024 poll also found that about two-thirds, 67 percent, of state residents say they’ll spend less than $100 celebrating Halloween.
Only 4 percent responded saying that they’ll spend $200 or more for their October 31 celebration.
A majority of those responding – 60 percent – said they intend to spend the same amount of money for Halloween as last year, while 14 percent say they will spend more and 20 percent will spend less.
In the 2023 poll, 61 percent of respondents said they will spend the same amount of money celebrating Halloween as they did the previous year – while 17 percent said they would spend more and 18 percent would spend less.
The poll also, of course, asked North Carolinians which type of candy was their favorite. There was a four-way tie for first place: M&M’s. Hershey bars, Kit Kat bars and Reese’s Cups came in first at 85 percent popularity.
Snickers bars, which 84 percent of people in the state like, almost made that a five-way tie.
The also-rans in the candy category were Twix (81%). Butterfinger (72%), Tootsie Rolls (70%), Skittles (66%), Whoppers (62%), Smarties (61%), candy corn (53%), Nerds (54%), pumpkin spice (53%) and Sour Patch Kids (56%).
Mary Janes – the peanut butter-like candy that comes in the orange and black wrapping, only had a favorable rating of 46 percent in North Carolina.
People’s favorite candies this year are remarkably similar to those of the previous few years.
The 2024 poll also asked how North Carolina residents are celebrating the day and night variety of things to celebrate Halloween. Here are some of the most popular ways…

The Panthers will start their season in December with 10 indoor door meets ahead of the Big South Conference Indoor Championships and the NCAA Indoor Championships. High Point will then move on to the outdoor season which features 17 regular season meets before the Big South and NCAA Championships.
"The rising level of our team's performance requires that we schedule accordingly," Head Coach Mike Esposito. We will be competing in National caliber meets each and every weekend. In addition, we are excited to host two outstanding outdoor meetings which will enable us to showcase our student athletes in front of our home fans."
HPU is one month away from opening the indoor season at the Liberty Kick-Off on December 5 in Lynchburg, Virginia and at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston, Massachusetts on December 7.
The Panthers start the New Year with back-to-back weekends in Virginia for the Virginia Tech Invite on January 17-18 in Blacksburg and the 5th Annual Brant Tolsma Invitational on January 23-25 in Lynchburg. High Point closes out the month of January at two different meets on January 31 through February 1 at the DeLoss Dodds Invite in Manhattan, Kansas and at the Gamecock Challenge in Columbia, South Carolina.
In the final three indoor regular season weekends, High Point travels back to Virginia for the Doc Hale Invite on February 7-8, the 11th Annual Darius Dixon Invitational and the DI Pre-National Meet on February 14-15 and the Virginia Tech Challenge on February 21-22.
The Panthers will cap off the indoor season with the Big South Indoor Championships in Columbia, S.C. on February 28 through March 1. Athletes that qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships will compete in Virginia Beach, Va. on March 14-15.
The outdoor season will start on March 14 at the Phoenix Invitational, right down the road from High Point at host Elon.
High Point will host its first meet of the outdoor season on March 21-22 at Vert Stadium. The Bod Davidson Team Challenge presented by Norris Woody will welcome Akron, Brown, Duke, Elon, Furman, Howard, Lafayette, Liberty, NC A&T, and Wake Forest. The Panthers will also compete at the 49er Classic that weekend in Charlotte, N.C.
During the weekend of March 26-29, qualified athletes will have the opportunity to travel to Austin, Texas for the Texas Relays and to Raleigh, N.C. for the Raleigh Relays. HPU will also compete at the Davidson Relays on March 29 for a single day meet hosted by Davidson College.
HPU will host its biggest meet of the season, the annual Vertklasse Meeting on April 4-5 at Vert Stadium.
Throughout the final weeks of April, the Panthers will be traveling to various places. The weekend of April 10-13, HPU will be spread across three meets, the Bryan Clay Combined Events (Azusa, Calif.), the Duke Invitational (Durham, N.C.), and the Southside Power Invite (Hickory, N.C.). This will be the second consecutive season that the Panthers have competed at the Bryan Clay Combined Events meet.
High Point will compete at the Wake Forest Invitational for a two-day meet this year on April 17-18 in Winston-Salem.
The Panthers close out the last weekend of April at the Charlotte Invitational (Charlotte, N.C.), the LR Open (Hickory, N.C.) and the Virginia High Performance meet (Charlottesville, Va.) on April 25-27.
Kicking off the Month of May, High Point will be local at the Aggie Classic (Greensboro, N.C.) and Duke Twilight (Durham, N.C.) during the weekend of May 2-4.
The final meet before the Big South Outdoor Championships will be at the Liberty Twilight in Lynchburg, Va. on May 6.
The 2025 Big South Outdoor Championships are hosted by UNC Asheville in Asheville, N.C. beginning on May 12 and lasting through May 14. Following the Championship, High Point will host the Dani Palooza Last Chance meet on May 18 ahead of the first round of the NCAA Championships in Jacksonville, Florida on May 28-31.
The 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships return to Eugene, Oregon during the week of June 11-14 at the University of Oregon.
High Point athletes will also have a chance to make the USA Track & Field U20 Championships and the USA Track & Field Championships.

The Panthers are aiming for their first Big South Championship title in a decade after securing third place in the last year. This season, they have faced a challenging schedule, finishing in the top 25 at every meet and demonstrating their readiness to rise.
In their most recent outing at the Panorama Farms Invitational, hosted by the University of Virginia, the Panthers finished in 11th place. Hunter Steinau continued his impressive streak as High Point's top finisher for the third week in a row, while Jason Thomson and Graham Ferguson followed closely behind, securing the second and third spots for the team.
Earlier this season, High Point traveled to Pennsylvania for the Paul Short Run, where it outperformed several Power 5 schools, including Temple, Syracuse, Rutgers, Hofstra, Brown, and Miami. Steinau once again led the Panthers as their top finisher, with sophomore Gavin Stevens following closely behind and Graham Ferguson right in the mix.
In the second week of the season, the Panthers split their efforts between the Adidas XC Challenge at NC State and the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota. Competing in Minnesota, Hunter Steinau kicked off his season with a top-100 finish in a highly competitive field, followed closely by Graham Ferguson and senior Kyler Koning. Meanwhile, at NC State, Jacob Fiorillo led the Panthers, with Aiden Morrison finishing right behind him.
In their season opener at the Covered Bridge Open, hosted by App State, the Panthers achieved their highest finish, placing fifth. Koning was the first Panther to cross the finish line, followed closely by Stevens and Fiorillo.

“I’m learning about the home furnishings industry and making connections with different companies,” Hellberg said. “I’m also learning what’s popular and what’s not, familiarizing myself with design trends.”
Working in the Currey & Company showroom for a second time brought increased responsibilities for Eva Baker, a sophomore international business major with minors in finance and Spanish from Columbus, Ohio. After she worked during the spring furniture market, she stayed in touch with the woman who became the company’s North Carolina sales representative.
“It was exciting to build that connection and try something new,” Baker said. “I’ve been introduced to some of the corporate people who are doing the international aspects. Also, just by building my network and talking to so many people from North Carolina, I’ve already been offered jobs after college with design firms. It’s just expanding my palette. I love the business side, but also being able to learn about design and the creative aspects.”
Shannon Spilman, a senior interior design major from Hunt Valley, Maryland, also appreciated the opportunity to work again in the Arteriors showroom.
“Continuously working at Arteriors during High Point Furniture Market has provided me with insightful experiences and knowledge, which will be beneficial for my career and future as an interior designer,” Spilman said. “Working for Arteriors has allowed me to build valuable relationships with industry professionals and sales representatives that I’m likely to work with in the future. The unique and intricate showroom items also inspire me and increase my knowledge about the materials and products being shown. This position has also improved my customer service capabilities in addition to grasping market trends and popular products. Finally, by seeing and engaging with the designers who visit the showroom, I have learned useful techniques and tools to use in future furniture markets I attend.”
Sophia Boucher, a junior fashion merchandising major from Richmond, Virginia, was inspired while working for a second time at the Bernhardt Furniture showroom.
“I have learned responsibility, respectfulness, teamwork and how to communicate, whether it’s in person or not,” Boucher said. “This experience has shown me a look into the industry. Whether it be sales, communications, design and design choices, I have been able to observe and learn from so many inspiring and hardworking people.”
Other HPU senior interior design majors who worked in the Bernhardt showroom included Madeline Kline from Fort Myers, Florida, and Raegan Lowder from Salisbury, North Carolina. Giani Marielli, a junior sport management major from New York, New York, worked with them and made connections with people from her hometown during her time at the tradeshow.
Working for a fifth High Point Market in the Loloi Rugs showroom provided a broad perspective for Danielle Pellegrino, a senior social media and digital communications major from Wayne, New Jersey. She saw how important social media is to a successful business.
Morgan Franzoni, a sophomore graphic design major with a minor in fashion design from Cumberland, Rhode Island, sharpened her skills and made professional connections in the home furnishings industry while working for Loloi during her first High Point Market.
“Guests, buyers or exhibitors, every single one of them has helped me develop different skills and gain an understanding about an actual real job in the outside world,” Franzoni said. “Especially with design, it’s hard because you may have some ideas and you’re trying to flaunt them, but you don’t want anyone to take them. It’s important to learn how to be able to market yourself.”
Mary Kate Hewitt, a senior interior design major from Hamden, Connecticut, was one of the HPU students who toured customers through the Caracole showroom. Other HPU students conducting tours included Gabrielle Tita, a senior marketing major from Durham, North Carolina; Jay Griffin, a senior interior design major from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Ginny Vincent, a senior interior design major from Durham, North Carolina; and Jaime Leon, a senior political science major from Boca Raton, Florida.
“I feel like I definitely got to gain my customer service skills by trying to meet the wants and needs of our clients and try to make sure they’re happy and they walk away with a smile on their face, because that puts a smile on my face,” said Amy Loving, a sophomore business administration major from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who was working her second High Point Market at the Loloi showroom.

Trent was the one of the greatest Panthers to ever don the Purple & White.
Since stepping onto High Point's campus, Trent's impact was felt, and the accolades he accumulated prove as such. He was a two-time Big South Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and three-time Big South First-Team All-Conference member. As team captain, he earned Big South Defensive Player of the Week seven times and helped the Panthers win three Big South Championships.
He was ranked No. 21 in the TopDrawerSoccer 2022 Midseason Top-100 players before being named to the TopDrawerSoccer Best XI Second Team in the same season. Trent was also tabbed to the 2022 United Soccer Coaches All-South Region Second Team.
Trent was monumental in the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory as he helped blank North Carolina, 2-0, in 2022. In that same season, Trent and the Panthers defeated seventh-ranked Maryland, 2-1, for the program's fourth win over a ranked team.
In three seasons, Trent started in every game played (52) as he compiled a 1.00 goals-against average with 145 saves and 22 clean sheets. The 6-foot-2 keeper finished his career with a 31-13-8 record.
His career numbers put him amongst the best-of-the-best in the nation. He finished his career sixth among NCAA Division I active career leaders in clean sheets (22) in the fewest games played (52) and was 12th in the same category across all NCAA Divisions. He also finished top-25 for DI active career leaders in goals against average (1.00), while setting the program record.
Following an incredible senior season, Trent became the highest drafted HPU men's soccer player ever in the Major League Soccer Draft when the Philadelphia Union selected him in the first round with pick No. 28 on December 21, 2022. He was the third Big South player to be selected during the first round.
A native of Greensboro, N.C., Trent attended Page High School and played club soccer for the Carolina Rapids and NC Fusion. Our hearts go out to his mother Annie B. Carter, sister Liza McGowan, fiancé Brie Losito and everyone else who loved Holden dearly. The Panthers will wear No. 1 Holden Trent patches the rest of the season to honor him as his memory will live on forever at High Point University.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Holden Trent Goal 13 Foundation, an organization that will honor Holden's legacy by helping other athletes or the Holden Trent Soccer Scholarship at High Point University that will benefit a first generation player on the HPU Soccer Team that exudes leadership and dedication to the sport. In honor of Holden's memory, we invite everyone to join us in celebrating his life by registering as an organ donor. This decision provides an unparalleled opportunity to give the gift of life and hope to others.
