KEY LARGO, Fla. – A 54-year-old Key Largo woman blamed her Yorkshire terrier when deputies pulled her over for a traffic violation Wednesday night, but she was actually drunk, according to a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
However, Michele Lee Burke’s driving on the Overseas Highway wasn’t what earned her a felony charge, deputies said.
An MCSO sergeant was backing up another deputy on a traffic stop at mile marker 104 just after 10 p.m. when Burke drove by, failing to move over into the left lane or slow down for the deputies on the shoulder as required by law, the report states.
That sergeant broke off the traffic stop and flipped on her lights and siren in an attempt to pull over Burke, who turned on her right blinker but failed to immediately pull over and turned onto Avenue B, where she eventually came to a stop, according to the report.
Burke, whose Yorkie was sitting on her lap, blamed the dog for her driving and had a “strong odor” of alcohol as she struggled to find her registration and proof of insurance, deputies said.
The sergeant “was able to tell the driver only had one eye and her left eye appeared watery,” the report states.
After Burke claimed she only had one drink that night, the sergeant put her through a field sobriety test, deputies said.
The sergeant “asked her if she suffered from any illnesses, and she said, ‘yes, one eye’ and began to laugh,” the report states. Deputies wrote that Burke was then asked if she was currently injured, “which she said ‘no,’ and when asked about physical defects, she said, ‘My mom, my brother.’”
Burke passed an initial attempted eye test but refused to cooperate on other attempts, the report states. Deputy Mario Marin then arrived to conduct a walk-and-turn exercise.
“Michele began laughing as I explained the instructions. I advised Michele it was a serious matter. Michele continued to laugh and stated she knew how to perform the exercise because she had seen it on Facebook,” he wrote in the report. “While demonstrating the walking phase of the exercise, Michele told me to ‘f--- off.’”
He wrote that after he asked Burke “to please cooperate with us to complete the exercises,” she walked away and said “I don’t care” and “I’m going to check on my dog.”
Deputies then attempted to arrest her, but she became “hostile” and cursed at them, tensed up and grabbed a deputy’s finger, the report states.
After deputies cuffed her and placed her in the cruiser, Burke asked where her dog was going and deputies told her animal control was going to come and pick the dog up, the report states.
“At that point, Michele became aggressive and informed me she wanted to punch Sergeant Davis in the throat,” Marin wrote. “Sgt. Davis tried explaining the dog would be returned to her but she continued screaming. Michele tilted her body onto her stomach, releasing herself from her seatbelt (restraint), and started kicking at me. I demanded Michele to stop her violent onslaught, to which she disobeyed and kicked my stomach multiple times.”
Burke then kicked the other deputy in the stomach multiple times as both tried to place her in a restraint, the report states.
Eventually, after she calmed down and was being taken to jail, Burke admitted to “having one too many that night,” according to the report, and later refused a breathalyzer test.
She was booked into jail Thursday morning on a felony charge of resisting an officer with violence and a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence.
According to jail records, she was being held without bond as of Thursday morning and is set to be arraigned Oct. 10.

LARGO — As thousands of new residents flock to Florida daily, new businesses continue to sprout up.
In Largo, a new pickleball training facility, a Chipotle fast-casual eatery, a drive-thru Wawa and a Korean boba tea/donut shop have opened recently or are in the process of opening, while the new Horizon West Bay project and its surrounding commercial, retail, and residential elements is quickly taking shape.
So, a new month means more business happenings, including the opening of a popular women’s clothing retailer at Largo Mall, a new retail pharmacy coming to Ulmerton Road and an overhaul of Keene Plaza.
Sprouts market coming
In what could be described as a huge bit of news for Largo, a new Sprouts Farmers Market is slated for construction at Keene Plaza, while the Babcock Home Furniture store currently located on Missouri Avenue is reportedly relocating to the same plaza on the northwest corner of East Bay Drive and Keene Road.
According to Paradise Ventures, a commercial retail developer based in St. Pete, plans for the plaza include “the demolition of approximately 35,500 square feet of existing retail space at the northeast leg of the center to make room for two brand-new retailers. Sprouts Farmers Market and Badcock Home Furniture & More will be constructed in its place.”
A news release also states that “the balance of the shopping center will receive a face lift,” which will include improvements to the site’s infrastructure such as parking lot, lighting, and driveway upgrades.
“We are very pleased to revitalize this long-standing neighborhood shopping hub with a brand-new Sprouts Farmers Market and be working, once again, with the team at the city of Largo,” Mike Connor, president and chief executive officer of Paradise Ventures, stated in the release. The release also stated improvements to the shopping center were scheduled to commence on Feb. 12, and a recent trip to the site revealed demo work has already begun, as the old Bealls outlet store is no more. The project’s completion is reportedly set for November.
According to city officials and documents, Babcock’s departure from its longtime home at 900 N. Missouri Ave. will allow Morningstar Self Storage to redevelop the site.
Board approves retail pharmacy
On March 7, the Largo Planning Board unanimously approved a conditional-use application for a retail pharmacy in two units at the Live Oaks Center, located at 9225 Ulmerton Road.
While the request for a C2 conditional use to establish 3,130 square feet of retail space in the existing 10-unit, 16,180-square-foot building passed, the quasi-judicial hearing lasted nearly 45 minutes, as a representative for the applicant, MCare Compound Pharmacy, highlighted the validity of the request based on the conditional uses allowed on the Industrial Limited-zoned land, while several current tenants expressed concerns about the added parking and trash the new business could bring to the office park.
“Our concern is parking,” Janet Mottola, a longtime plaza business owner who serves on the plaza’s board of directors, said, adding “as the business grows, parking becomes an issue.”
She said if MCare “just shipped their product, we don’t have a problem,” while other tenants noted trash is already an issue, prompting MCare’s representative, attorney Todd Pressman, to question their relevancy to the application.
“You’ve heard from four owners today with varying concerns,” he said. “But I didn’t hear anything that addressed the specific criteria that you’re to review.”
Pressman stated the compound pharmacy, which unlike a regular drugstore, mixes compounds together in special amounts to meet specific needs, has light foot traffic because much of their product is shipped out daily.
“So, they should be thrilled (MCare) is moving in, because it’s a low parking rate,” Pressman said. “It’s below the city standard. That’s great rather than having another Industrial Limited use that could have much higher, double, or triple, that parking level.”
Pressman and the MCare owner then fielded questions from the board relevant to the application, including why the business was relocating from Kenneth City (to be closer to Largo and to own the building) and whether any combustible materials would be used on the premises (no, it’s not allowed). Pressman also noted the owner asked for a special condition that would see the retail use stripped from the property should MCare ever vacate the site.
“But they have no intent to leave,” he said. When asked why they asked for that clause, Pressman said, “We heard some people had concerns about this request, so we asked for this condition.” The conditional use request was ultimately approved by a 4-0 vote.
Largo mall additions
Maurices, a popular women’s clothing retailer based in Minnesota, is the latest new addition at Largo Mall. The shop, which is advertised as being all-inclusive, carrying sizes from 0-24, recently opened its doors in suites 706 and 710 near Publix.
According to Renee Schedlbauer, Maurices’ senior vice president of stores, the shop is the first in the Tampa Bay area and the newest of six in the state as the company, which was founded in 1931 and has 900 locations in the U.S. and Canada, continues expanding its portfolio south.
“We’re known to be a leading women’s retailer offering affordable styles in sizes 0-24,” she said by phone March 11. “This is our furthest south store, and we definitely see Florida as an obvious area for expansion, especially with many midwestern and Canadian residents visiting and moving to the area.
Last month, Tampa Bay Newspapers reported on the opening of the new Boba Plus Mochidonut in the plaza. According to the owners of the colorful shop, which specializes in homemade food items including donuts, hot dogs, and teas, the business has been well received by new and old fans of the tasty Korean delicacies.
“Boba teas have been around for a long time, but we are one of the only shops on this side of town,” owner Ian Nguyen said, adding they’ve been busy since opening in early February by catering to fans of the flavored teas and homemade treats. “A lot of people are thrilled,” Nguyen said, adding, “and kids really like us.”

Esther Whitley was under doctor’s orders to do physical therapy after a procedure on her knee, but even the mildest exercise left her out of breath and her heart racing.
A visit to her cardiologist revealed that the mitral valve in her heart was leaking, meaning blood was flowing in the wrong direction. Complicating her condition was the presence of a tumor on her heart.
Fixing the mitral valve can be done with a catheter but not with a tumor in the way. That would normally mean open-heart surgery was the only option, but doctors felt that was too risky for Whitley, who is 86 and already has a pacemaker.
Instead, Whitley was referred to HCA Florida Largo Hospital and recently became the first Florida patient to undergo a new procedure to remove tumors using a specially designed catheter, according to the hospital.
The operation was first performed in 2022 and is known as the SEATTLE procedure, an acronym for Simplified Extraction of Atrial Tumor With Targeted Loop Electricity. Whitley is the 10th patient to undergo the procedure, according to Saurabh Sanon, a structural interventional cardiologist who performed the surgery at the Largo hospital.
The special catheter, which was inserted into a vein near Whitley’s groin and pushed toward her heart, is equipped with two loops and a meshlike basket to catch the tumor.
During the almost three-hour surgery, Sanon hooked one loop over the tumor and sent an electrical current through it, cutting it from the heart wall and cauterizing behind it. The other loop was used to guide the tumor into the mesh basket.
“This is a very complex procedure,” he said. “Each step relies on multiple modalities to make sure it’s safe and controlled.”
The hand controls for the catheter give the surgeon some tactile response to help guide their movements, but Sanon relied on two different imaging systems to see what was happening inside Whitley’s heart.
A fluoroscopy monitor provided live X-ray images while Sanon also used ultrasound imaging from a probe inserted through Whitley’s esophagus into her stomach. The probe is made of a special type of polymer plastic resistant to stomach acid.
“The success of something like that depends (on) implanters’ ability to synthesize the images you’re seeing,” Sanon said. “In your mind, you create this 3D space in which you work.”
The valve in Whitley’s heart will be repaired through a second catheter intervention scheduled for Wednesday using special clips to fix the leak.
The SEATTLE procedure could herald a change in treatment for older patients whose heart tumors were often left untreated because there was no noninvasive surgical option, Sanon said.
“This is definitely a breakthrough in structural heart technique and in the field,” Sanon said. “This will allow us to treat so many patients that are living their lives with these tumors.”

Whitley, who lives in New Tampa, has been isolating from her family so as not to risk infection before her next procedure.
A University of South Florida graduate, Whitley worked as a librarian in the Hillsborough County school district before she retired. A mother of four children, she has five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, with two more arriving in the spring.
Her family has been ribbing her about the procedure making her famous, she said.
“I’ve never been in that position before; I’ve led an ordinary life,” she said. “My mother lived to be 99, so I figured I better take care of myself.”

LARGO, FL — Florida’s first drive-through Wawa is set to open in Largo, according to Tampa Bay Newspapers.
The 2,036-square-foot drive-thru at 2530 E. Bay Drive — the site of a former drive-thru restaurant — is expected to open by the end of the year.
“Wawa is committed to testing and innovating new store formats to provide the greatest level of convenience for our customers,” Lori Bruce, Wawa’s senior manager of media relations, told TBN. “With this new Largo store, we plan to continue to test and learn from our drive-thru prototype while gathering feedback from our customers and associates.”
By the end of 2023, the convenience store chain said it plans to have 250 stores operating in Florida, according to the Miami Herald.
The gas station and convenience store favorite has 29 stores scheduled to open in spring, summer and fall of 2023, continuing to grow the brand's presence around the Sunshine State.

Wawa launched its new drive-thru concept — inspired, in part, by the COVID-19 pandemic — at the end of 2020 with its first-ever location of this type opening in Westhampton, New Jersey, according to NJ.com.
So far, there are only two locations, the second in Morrisville, Pennsylvania.
The brand’s drive-thru locations offer a smaller, more limited menu with a focus on combo meals, much like a fast-food restaurant. The stand-alone Wawa also won’t sell gas.
"Wawa continues to test new store concepts with this latest drive thru format, providing an opportunity for our customers to experience and enjoy their favorite Wawa products while remaining inside their car," Terri Micklin, the company’s director of construction, said according to Convenience Store News. "Wawa is committed to increasing convenience and (providing) new options for service while keeping safety and comfort top of mind. Wawa hopes to learn from the layout, workflow and traffic flow at this location, as it continues to explore alternatives for longer term application to stores post-COVID-19."
