Commercial Truck Insurance in Milledgeville, GA

  • Let's face it - truckers in America have always been the backbone of our great country. They still are in modern times. On any given day, thousands of trucks traverse our highways and local roads, delivering goods and products on time so that businesses and consumers have what they need to live life. And while commercial trucking can be an incredibly lucrative way to make a living and put food on the table, it can also be risky and expensive.
  • Whether you're the owner of a fleet, an independent trucker, or have a business that uses big rigs to transport goods, you need commercial trucking insurance to protect you and your client's investments, shield you from liability, and more.
  • That's where working with a reliable truck insurance agency comes into play. Unfortunately, for many commercial truck insurance providers, serving the needs of truckers is low on the proverbial totem pole. At Independence Insurance Agency, nothing could be further from the truth.

Common Types of Big Rig Truck Insurance in Milledgeville, GA

At Independence Insurance Agency, we offer several types of insurance coverage for local, intermediate, and long-haul trucking needs. Here are just a few categories of trucking insurance coverage that our agency offers.

As the foundation of your insurance policy, liability coverage is required by law in most states in the U.S. It provides coverage for damage or injuries caused to properties or other people if your 18-wheeler is responsible for the crash. Without liability coverage, it's almost impossible to drive a truck or run a trucking business without major legal consequences.

Having physical damage coverage is an essential component that shouldn't be overlooked. This insurance is responsible for covering the expenses related to repairing or replacing your truck in situations such as accidents, theft, vandalism, and other damaging events. By having this coverage, you can rest assured that your business won't be affected significantly by unexpected incidents, and you can continue running your operations smoothly even in challenging times.

For trucking companies, the goods they transport are crucial to their operations. To protect these goods from damage, loss, or theft while in transit, cargo insurance is essential. This coverage provides much-needed peace of mind for both you and your clients, allowing you to reimburse clients for any losses sustained while protecting your reputation and brand identity.

Non-Trucking Liability Insurance is designed to cover property damage or bodily injury that may occur during personal time when the driver/truck is not under dispatch. This coverage can be applied with or without a trailer and is added to a commercial policy as an endorsement.

While Independence Insurance Agency has built a reputation of excellence in serving the needs of truckers, we also offer general liability. Also known as Truckers General Liability, this coverage insures for bodily injuries or property damage that happen due to business activities that are NOT the cause of operating a truck. It covers accidents that occur in parking lots, rest stops, also while loading or unloading. General liability can also cover losses related to theft and vandalism. Most brokers and shippers will require this coverage to work with you.

Bobtail insurance is a type of coverage that is comparable to non-trucking liability, which is designed to offer protection when driving a truck without a trailer attached. This is commonly referred to as "bobtailing." With bobtail insurance, the tractor is covered at all times, even when it is not attached to a trailer, regardless of whether or not the truck is under dispatch.

Trailer interchange insurance is a must-have if you're involved in a trailer interchange agreement. This essential coverage offers protection for trailers owned by other parties that you're using under a contractual agreement. It covers damages caused by collisions, fire, theft, and vandalism, providing assurance to all parties involved.

Three plus 3 Safe Driving Tips to

Lower the Cost of Truck Insurance in Milledgeville, GA

Keeping your drivers safe on the road is crucial not only for their own well-being but also for the safety of other motorists and the financial stability of your business. The Department of Labor has identified the trucking industry as one of the most hazardous sectors in the U.S. In fact, trucking and logistics fleets are known for their high injury and fatality rates. By improving how safely your truckers drive, you can help reduce expenses related to claim payouts, accidents, and insurance premium hikes.

Whether you own a large fleet or you're the owner and operator of a single rig, keep these safe driving tips in mind to help lower your insurance costs.

Implement Preventative Maintenance Plans

Ensuring the safety of your drivers begins with the safety of their vehicles. Trucks and tractor-trailers that do not receive regular maintenance, such as oil and brake pad changes, are more likely to experience breakdowns while on the road. Telematics devices provide real-time insight into engine and odometer data, including fault codes.

This information enables your mechanics to create comprehensive preventative maintenance schedules based on mileage, history of previous breakdowns, days, and more. Additionally, they can receive immediate notifications for critical fault codes. By implementing routine maintenance and proactive repair schedules, you can ensure that your vehicles are in top condition, minimizing the likelihood of breakdowns, which can help reduce the cost of trucker insurance.

Practice Defensive Driving

This approach aims to mitigate the risk of fatal crashes and injuries by proactively identifying and responding to potentially dangerous situations and making informed decisions while driving. By adopting defensive driving techniques, drivers can reduce their likelihood of accidents, thereby minimizing the need for expensive repairs, claim payouts, and increased insurance premiums.

Some of the easiest ways for you or your drivers to practice safe driving include:

  • Be Wary of Blind Spots: Operating a reefer or tractor-trailer means driving high off of the ground, which can make visibility limited, especially in blind spots. To check your blind spot, look over your shoulder and out of your windows while changing lanes.
  • Be Ready for Emergencies on the Road: It's important for drivers to be ready for unexpected situations when driving, especially during long trips. They should be equipped to handle emergencies such as poor driving conditions or big rig breakdowns.
  • Use the Three-Second Rule: Truck drivers should try to maintain a three-second gap between their vehicle and the car in front of them. This means that the truck driver should reach a certain point on the road three seconds after the car in front of them has passed that same point.
  • Always Use Right and Left Turn Indicators: It's important for drivers to always use their turn signals when changing lanes or exiting highways, even if they don't see any other cars around. This is not only required by law, but it also reduces the chances of accidents occurring on the road.

Find Ways to Prevent Distracted Driving

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), distracted driving is the primary reason behind truck driver accidents. Any activity that takes a driver's attention away from the road or the steering wheel is considered distracted driving. Distractions can come in various forms, such as eating while driving or gazing at a billboard outside the window. However, the most frequent form of distracted driving is the use of cellphones, specifically texting while driving.

Assuming you or your driver's rigs are equipped with dual-facing cameras, try reviewing footage of an unsafe driving incident. Coach your drivers on ways to correct their unsafe behaviors or look up ways to do so yourself if you're the one operating the big rig. The bottom line is that when your drivers aren't distracted, they drive safer. And when they drive safer, the cost of 18-wheeler insurance in cityname, state can be reduced.

The future happens fast sometimes.

Take, for example, the original Milledgeville Pizza Hut, which had a jukebox and giant clunky cash register. Compare that to the new Milledgeville Pizza Hut, just opened last week, which has delivery robots and no cash register whatsoever.

It's all part of the pizza chain's new location at Georgia College & State University's West Campus, located off of the bypass. The restaurant held its grand opening last Thursday, and WMAZ/Channel 13 was there to check it out...

For local Pizza Hut loyalists, the new restaurant indeed is open to the general public and not just reserved for university students and employees. There's no signage, currently, and there's no dedicated parking for the new Pizza Hut. In terms of getting there, get off the bypass, drive for a little while and make the first available right, which will take you to a commons area and bus ramp. The Pizza Hut is located on the backside of the building that's situated to the left of the dorms...

Delivery is only available to students living in the West Campus dorms, courtesy of the aforementioned pizza delivery robots, and the inside of the restaurant essentially is a "grab-and-go." The menu currently consists of "6-piece mild wings; 9-inch hand tossed cheese and pepperoni and meat lover’s pizza; and 8-piece cheese, pepperoni bread and cinnamon poppers."

There's no calling in for carryout. However, if a certain menu item isn't available on the hot racks, customers can place an in-store order and wait for however long it takes.

The hours of operation are Sunday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to midnight.

Pizza Hut was the original pizza chain restaurant in Milledgeville and first opened its doors in 1973, a full 50 years ago believe it or not. It was a really big deal at the time, but then again anything that was new in Milledgeville back then was a really big deal at the time. The new West Campus location is actually the fourth incarnate of a Milledgeville Pizza Hut. The original Milledgeville Pizza Hut was located across the street from the Piggly Wiggly on South Wayne Street and featured ample indoor seating. That structure had the classic Pizza Hut look, the look that inspired an entire comedic blog – Used To Be A Pizza Hut – which is still pretty hilarious after all these years...

The original Milledgeville Pizza Hut then caught fire in 2005 and was replaced by a smaller and sleeker Pizza Hut. Fast forward several years, and the new franchisees decided to abandon the southside and move to a location on North Columbia Street, across from Arby's. That didn't last long, though, leaving Milledgeville Pizza Hut-less until last week.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Update:

The City of Milledgeville says that the boil water advisory for portions of the city is over.

The announcement was made Tuesday, one day after a water main break caused concern about the potential of health hazards entering portions of the city's water system.

The boil water advisory was issued for 127 Blandy Road, Merriweather Circle, Pine Lane Drive and Stevens Drive but, after tests came back with "favorable results," the city's water department and the Georgia EPD says that they rescinded the order.

They did bacteriological sampling within the area affected by the water main break -- which lowered water pressure to dangerously low levels -- and found that the water supply was safe for residents.

When water pressure is low, that increases the risk for potential health hazards to enter the water supply, since those areas are unable able to prevent backflow or back-siphonages of water, the city said in their original post.

Original:

A boil water advisory has been issued Monday by Milledgeville's Water and Sewer department for some areas of the city after a water main break, according to a press release from the City of Milledgeville.

They say the boil water advisory applies to 127 Blandy Road, Meriweather Circle, Pine Lanes Drive and Stevens Drive.

According to the press release, the water main break has caused water pressure in those areas to drop to dangerously low levels. This increases the potential for health hazards, the city said, since these areas with zero pressure are unable to prevent backflow or back-siphonages of water.

That can introduce water of unknown quality into the water distribution system, the press release said.

All residents in these areas are urged to "boil" all water prior to using it for drinking, cooking or preparing baby food. They say the water needs to be boiled for at least one minute after reaching a rolling boil before it is safe for use.

The City of Milledgeville did not release any information about when the boil water advisory might end, and they say that citizens in the affected areas should continue to boil water until they are notified otherwise.

They say that notice will be issued when the system has been restored to "full operation" and they have determined that the quality of the water in their water distribution system is safe for human consumption.

For residents with any questions about the boil water advisory, the press release says that you can contact the City of Milledgeville's Water and Sewer Department at 478-414-4052.

For many years, there was exactly one coffee place in Milledgeville. Its name was Blackbird Coffee, and it had the whole town to itself.

Then, sort of like Dollar Generals, coffee businesses began sprouting up from the ground on North Columbia Street. First was Starbucks in 2007 and then Dunkin Donuts in 2013, and now the North Columbia business corridor is slated to get another coffee spot, as "7 Brew Drive Thru Coffee" is coming to town, according to The Telegraph in Macon.

7 Brew will set up shop at 1801 North Columbia Street, which is the small property beside the Goodwill shopping center, just up the hill from Lowe's. The property originally opened as a Bruster's Real Ice Cream in 2002, and it later went through several business incarnations after Bruster's closed. Most recently, it was a title loan business.

The property is a natural fit for 7 Brew, which is drive-thru only and doesn't require much land. Matthew Davis, the developer, told Baldwin2k News that the Milledgeville 7 Brew remains in the design phase, and it's not immediately clear if it will be a complete tear-down. No target opening date has been set.

7 Brew's entire menu can be viewed by clicking –>Full Menu.pdf. The business "prides itself on serving more than just coffee, "according to THIS PRESS RELEASE. "The experience of 7 Brew Coffee includes energy drinks, Italian sodas, smoothies, teas and more."

Davis, the CEO of Davis Companies out of Albany, certainly is betting big on 7 Brew. All totaled, 76 different 7 Brews are planned for Georgia, including one in Macon and one in Warner Robins.

"We love the Milledgeville market. We think that there are a lot of exciting things going on in Milledgeville, and we're looking forward to opening," Davis said.

So, just for the heck of it, whatever became of Bruster's? Well, it turns out that Bruster's is still alive and kicking, just not in Milledgeville. Bruster's had a record year in 2022, and there are still 26 different Bruster's locations around Georgia.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — According to Feeding America, 5,400 folks are facing food insecurity in Baldwin County. That's 1 in 8 people. Milly Free Fridge, a mutual aid organization, stocks a fridge with free food to help fight this need. But if they don't get more help, they'll shut it down.

If Baldwin County is your home, then this is your fridge. Stephanie Jett with Milly Free Fridge helps stock the fridge with free food and says it is open to anyone.

"Absolutely not need-based. Anyone can access it, 24/7, 365 days out of the year," she said. "It is based on the premise of neighbors helping neighbors and sharing what you can."

And there is a great need for food in Milledgeville as the resources are few and far between, according to Jett. Most of the diverse and cheaper options are on the north side of town. The fridge provides a bit of help to a problem in Milledgeville.

"We have no homeless shelter; we have very few resources for unhoused and for people who are living in food insecurity," Jett said. "It's a bandaid for a gaping wound."

Jessica McQuain with Milly Free Fridge says they still want to try to curb hunger. McQuain says in three years, they have partnered with over 20 organizations to pre-make food, package it, stock and clean the fridge, and they say it's helping folks.

"We throw away so much food, so if we can redirect that and put it somewhere people can have access to, that's a double win," she said. "It says god bless you; without the little free fridge, me and my friends would go hungry some nights. May you have an amazing life, sincerely a homeless addict. This resource, to lose it, would keep me up at night."

The thing that threatens to keep McQuain up at night could be a reality if they can't get more help by the end of the year, as they will have to shut the fridge down.

"Without the sustained support to keep the site clean and safe and to keep the food that's available, we need a larger group," she said.

Because this is everyone's fridge, free for anyone to take food, but it is also free to give.

"Even if it's just a few hamburger buns. Just pop them in a ziplock bag, date them, throw them in the fridge. Somebody could use that. We all have ownership in this, so we all succeed when it succeeds, and we all fail when we all fail." Jett said.

Anyone can clean, stock or check on the fridge without permission. The best kind of food donations are individual-sized, like sandwiches in separate baggies or cans. It can be cooked food as long as it has a clear date and label again. The fridge is located on South Wilkinson Street.
