Commercial Truck Insurance in Naples, FL

  • Let's face it - truckers in America have always been the backbone of our great country. They still are in modern times. Common Types of Big Rig Truck Insurance in Naples, FL

At Independence Insurance Agency, we offer several types of insurance coverage for local, intermediate, and long-haul trucking needs. Here are just a few categories of trucking insurance coverage that our agency offers.

As the foundation of your insurance policy, liability coverage is required by law in most states in the U.S. It provides coverage for damage or injuries caused to properties or other people if your 18-wheeler is responsible for the crash. Without liability coverage, it's almost impossible to drive a truck or run a trucking business without major legal consequences.

Having physical damage coverage is an essential component that shouldn't be overlooked. This insurance is responsible for covering the expenses related to repairing or replacing your truck in situations such as accidents, theft, vandalism, and other damaging events. By having this coverage, you can rest assured that your business won't be affected significantly by unexpected incidents, and you can continue running your operations smoothly even in challenging times.

For trucking companies, the goods they transport are crucial to their operations. To protect these goods from damage, loss, or theft while in transit, cargo insurance is essential. This coverage provides much-needed peace of mind for both you and your clients, allowing you to reimburse clients for any losses sustained while protecting your reputation and brand identity.

Non-Trucking Liability Insurance is designed to cover property damage or bodily injury that may occur during personal time when the driver/truck is not under dispatch. This coverage can be applied with or without a trailer and is added to a commercial policy as an endorsement.

While Independence Insurance Agency has built a reputation of excellence in serving the needs of truckers, we also offer general liability. Also known as Truckers General Liability, this coverage insures for bodily injuries or property damage that happen due to business activities that are NOT the cause of operating a truck. It covers accidents that occur in parking lots, rest stops, also while loading or unloading. General liability can also cover losses related to theft and vandalism. Most brokers and shippers will require this coverage to work with you.

Bobtail insurance is a type of coverage that is comparable to non-trucking liability, which is designed to offer protection when driving a truck without a trailer attached. This is commonly referred to as "bobtailing." With bobtail insurance, the tractor is covered at all times, even when it is not attached to a trailer, regardless of whether or not the truck is under dispatch.

Trailer interchange insurance is a must-have if you're involved in a trailer interchange agreement. This essential coverage offers protection for trailers owned by other parties that you're using under a contractual agreement. It covers damages caused by collisions, fire, theft, and vandalism, providing assurance to all parties involved.

Three plus 3 Safe Driving Tips to

Lower the Cost of Truck Insurance in Naples, FL

Keeping your drivers safe on the road is crucial not only for their own well-being but also for the safety of other motorists and the financial stability of your business. The Department of Labor has identified the trucking industry as one of the most hazardous sectors in the U.S. In fact, trucking and logistics fleets are known for their high injury and fatality rates. By improving how safely your truckers drive, you can help reduce expenses related to claim payouts, accidents, and insurance premium hikes.

Whether you own a large fleet or you're the owner and operator of a single rig, keep these safe driving tips in mind to help lower your insurance costs.

Implement Preventative Maintenance Plans

Ensuring the safety of your drivers begins with the safety of their vehicles. Trucks and tractor-trailers that do not receive regular maintenance, such as oil and brake pad changes, are more likely to experience breakdowns while on the road. Telematics devices provide real-time insight into engine and odometer data, including fault codes.

This information enables your mechanics to create comprehensive preventative maintenance schedules based on mileage, history of previous breakdowns, days, and more. Additionally, they can receive immediate notifications for critical fault codes. By implementing routine maintenance and proactive repair schedules, you can ensure that your vehicles are in top condition, minimizing the likelihood of breakdowns, which can help reduce the cost of trucker insurance.

Practice Defensive Driving

This approach aims to mitigate the risk of fatal crashes and injuries by proactively identifying and responding to potentially dangerous situations and making informed decisions while driving. By adopting defensive driving techniques, drivers can reduce their likelihood of accidents, thereby minimizing the need for expensive repairs, claim payouts, and increased insurance premiums.

Some of the easiest ways for you or your drivers to practice safe driving include:

  • Be Wary of Blind Spots: Operating a reefer or tractor-trailer means driving high off of the ground, which can make visibility limited, especially in blind spots. To check your blind spot, look over your shoulder and out of your windows while changing lanes.
  • Be Ready for Emergencies on the Road: It's important for drivers to be ready for unexpected situations when driving, especially during long trips. They should be equipped to handle emergencies such as poor driving conditions or big rig breakdowns.
  • Use the Three-Second Rule: Truck drivers should try to maintain a three-second gap between their vehicle and the car in front of them. This means that the truck driver should reach a certain point on the road three seconds after the car in front of them has passed that same point.
  • Always Use Right and Left Turn Indicators: It's important for drivers to always use their turn signals when changing lanes or exiting highways, even if they don't see any other cars around. This is not only required by law, but it also reduces the chances of accidents occurring on the road.

Find Ways to Prevent Distracted Driving

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), distracted driving is the primary reason behind truck driver accidents. Any activity that takes a driver's attention away from the road or the steering wheel is considered distracted driving. Distractions can come in various forms, such as eating while driving or gazing at a billboard outside the window. However, the most frequent form of distracted driving is the use of cellphones, specifically texting while driving.

Assuming you or your driver's rigs are equipped with dual-facing cameras, try reviewing footage of an unsafe driving incident. Coach your drivers on ways to correct their unsafe behaviors or look up ways to do so yourself if you're the one operating the big rig. The bottom line is that when your drivers aren't distracted, they drive safer. And when they drive safer, the cost of 18-wheeler insurance in cityname, state can be reduced.

A Florida black bear was spotted aboard a yacht earlier this week.

It seems like the wildlife living near Naples want to fit in and do their part to uphold the lifestyles of the rich and famous brand.

The black bear in question was caught hanging out on a 50-foot sailing catamaran docked at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club.

Captain Todd Dillman, the owner of TowBoatU.S.-Naples & Marco Island, a tow service that tows boats when they break down, happened to be in the right place at the right time on Wednesday. He was driving by the yacht club in his boat when he spotted the bear walking around the catamaran deck.

Let’s just say seeing the black bear was a bit of a surprise for Dillman, who thought he had seen it all in his line of work.

"Snakes, gators, saltwater crocs, sharks ... never in a million years did I think I would see a bear."

Dillman said the bear swam across the harbor and got up on the boat.

"I had to video it because no one would believe me if I told it," Dillman said.

Where is the bear now?

Despite the bear abandoning its post, the bear is still “running around downtown,” Dillman said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commision are monitoring the bear and trying to make sure it goes home.

How common is it to see a bear running about?

There may not be a large quantity of black bears running around the Naples area, but it's not unusual to see on in your neighborhood from time to time.

Residents have posted a steady stream of videos on social media showing bears roaming around yards and looking for food inside garbage cans, frolicking in front of a house, or on a million-dollar yacht for example.

Black bears tend to prefer habitats with a dense understory such as forested wetlands and uplands, natural pinelands, hammocks, scrub, and shrub lands, but will use just about every habitat type in Florida, including swamps, according to the FWC website.

What to do if you encounter a bear?

Since spotting a black bear in Florida from time to time isn’t unusual, there are a couple tips from The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission you can keep in mind if you ever see one while you are out and about. It might be rare for bears to seriously injure people, but bears have bitten and scratched people defending themselves, their cubs, or their food.

If you see a bear from a distance:

If you see a bear at a close distance:

If a black bear does attack you, you are encouraged to fight back aggressively. People have been able to successfully fend off a black bear attack using rocks, sticks, or even their bare hands, according to the FWC.

Cons

One significant downside of living in Naples, Florida is the high cost of housing. The allure of the city’s stunning natural beauty and upscale amenities comes at a price, and that price often translates into steep housing costs. When it comes to Naples, Florida real estate, you’ll find that housing prices are considerably higher compared to other cities in Florida. As of April 2023, the median sales price in Naples reached $725,000 In comparison, the median sale price in Orlando stood at a more affordable $360,000, while in Tampa, it amounted to $420,000.

The demand for housing in this desirable location, coupled with limited available land for development, has resulted in a tight housing market and elevated prices. Additionally, the cost of living, in general, tends to be higher in Naples, which can further strain budgets and impact overall affordability.

Being a popular tourist destination, Naples can get quite crowded, especially during the winter when ‘snowbirds’ from colder states flock to enjoy the balmy Florida weather. The influx of tourists can lead to overcrowded beaches, long wait times at restaurants, and a general increase in the hustle and bustle around the city, potentially hampering the tranquil lifestyle some residents seek.

Naples’ tropical paradise charm is somewhat tarnished by its vulnerability to hurricanes. Like much of Florida, the city faces an annual threat of these severe storms. This year alone, on average, floods have caused $1,399 in property damage for homeowners. While modern infrastructure and advanced warning systems mitigate the risks, residents must be prepared for potential evacuations, property damage, and the stress associated with hurricane season.

Despite its many charms, Naples falls short of walkability. The city has a below-average Walk Score of 35, indicating a strong dependence on cars. This can be a downside for those who prefer a lifestyle where amenities are within walking distance.

Summers in Naples can be intensely hot and humid. The city’s tropical monsoon climate means that summer temperatures frequently rise into the 90s (Fahrenheit), with high humidity levels adding to the discomfort. Those not used to such weather might find the summer months challenging and need to consider this aspect before moving.

Your next home is just a tap away

Is Naples, Florida a good place to live? The bottom line

With its breathtaking natural beauty, lively cultural scene, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, Naples certainly has its merits. However, there are downsides to be mindful of. The high cost of housing can pose a challenge for those on a budget, and the risk of hurricanes and occasional tourist crowds can be drawbacks. Ultimately, the decision to make Naples your home depends on your priorities, financial situation, and tolerance for the mentioned considerations. By carefully evaluating these factors, you can determine if Naples is the right fit for your desired lifestyle and aspirations.

In total, 68 cane toads were caught in Naples. the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said there is no current population estimate for cane toads.

However, none of the cane toads should be in Southwest Florida. Cane toads are invasive, and Lee Smith is taking them on by himself, one toad at a time.

Smith is a husband, father, retired high school biology teacher, snake breeder and even a cane toad catcher.

“I use snake tongs, which are on Amazon, to pick them up mostly because they don’t have to bend over, but they’re really easy to catch. I also use a headlamp,” said Smith.

Smith explained his toad trouble started late one night when his wife couldn’t sleep because of the insufferable toad noises.

When cane toads mate, they make a lot of noise. Also, they’re toxic to other animals such as dogs and cats.

“How does it make you feel? It’s really bad when you don’t see hardly any native species,” said Smith

So when he has the time for toads, Smith goes to the ponds in his neighborhood at night. He catches as many toads as he can and euthanizes them according to FWC’s recommendations.

FWC explains that, like other invasive species, cane toads are not protected except by anti-cruelty laws and can be removed year-round with landowner permission. For the people who say it’s inhumane, Smith has a straightforward response.

“I tell him to try to think of the native species that are really suffering because Florida has a pretty delicate ecosystem, and it’s hard enough with people, you know that– and you start bringing these other invasive species gets real tough,” said Smith.

Burmese Pythons do seem to get a lot of the spotlight when it comes to invasive species in Florida. Nevertheless, the Florida climate is a breeding ground for many invasive species, including cane toads.

“I think Cane Toads could be worse,” said Smith.

Watch: Florida Black bear chills on luxury boat

A Florida Black bear found itself hanging out on a luxury boat at the Naples Yacht Club earlier this week. Todd Dillman, who owns TowBoatUS Naples, said he was towing a boat back to the docks when he spotted the bear. At first he didn't believe it -- and wasn't sure anyone would believe what he saw -- so he pulled out his phone and began recording.

NAPLES, Fla. - A Florida Black bear seemingly left the woods and decided to give itself a luxury "daycation" aboard a sailing yacht in Naples this week.

Todd Dillman, owner of TowBoatUS Naples & Marco Island, was finishing a job towing another boat on Thursday in Royal Harbor when he spotted the bear on the 50-foot catamaran, named "TomCat," docked at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club.

"I was thinking, I'm not much of a filmer. And I was like, ‘I probably should film this' because if I tell people this story, they're not going to believe me," he told FOX 35 Friday in a Zoom interview.

"Definitely chose a nice boat to get on."

The bear could be seen taking in the views of the water in the back of the boat, sniffing around, and then exploring the rest of the boat, possibly in search of food or a way off. It wasn't immediately clear what led the bear to the boat or where it came from.

Dillman said he has seen a lot of wildlife during his time towing boats, but to see a bear, let alone one on a boat, was a first for him.

"We see, you know, the saltwater crocs, the alligators, the sharks, the rays, all of that. So, I mean, wildlife is an abundance around here, but a bear not too often," he said.

"This is definitely a new one," he added.

Eventually, the bear made its way off the boat, but it's not exactly clear where it went next. The FWC said it was aware of the bear and the videos circulating online, and that its bear biologists were monitoring its movements.

The FWC asked that people give this particular bear – and any other bear they see – some space.

Bears are most active in the spring and the fall in search of food. In the spring, the bears are coming out of the winter months and are also teaching their cubs how to find food. In the fall, the bears look to consume more calories ahead of the winter and may search for food in unusual areas, the FWC said.

If a bear cannot find easy food, such as outdoor pet food, bird seed, or trash, it will move on to other areas.

It's one of a number of bear incidents we've reported on recently.

Earlier this week in Sanford, Andrew Scheirer spotted what appeared to be a well-fed bear in someone's garage within the Preserve at Astor Farm subdivision. His video showed the bear munching on some sort of snack.

"They are a part of the neighborhood. Not aggressive and not scary or threatening. We love our bears. Wish development would stop encroaching on their natural habitat." Scheirer said.

Over the last few months, a popular three-legged bear, aptly named "Tripod," has been spotted throughout neighborhoods in Seminole County. In one case, be broke through someone's screen porch and roamed around an outdoor kitchen, but ultimately left empty-handed.

In September, Tripod managed to get into the porch of another home where he found the fridge, reportedly stocked with White Claws and other beverages.

"Oh my God, look at him," Josaury Diglio's son could be heard saying in one of the videos as the bear rummaged through a cabinet by the pool. "This is crazy!" he added, capturing the bizarre encounter on his cellphone.

She said Tripod managed to get three White Claws out of the fridge.

There are estimated to be more than 4,000 bears throughout Florida. The last count was conducted in 2015. The next count is scheduled for 2025.

Naples man captures 19-foot Burmese python in Big Cypress; confirmed as a world record

The hunt for the Burmese python in the Florida Everglades is always on and nowadays a new record is set every few months when someone catches the next "big" thing — one that is heavier, longer, or has more interesting contents in its stomach than any previous python.

Naples resident Jake Waleri, who is 22 and an amateur python hunter, caught a 19-footer with some friends earlier this month in the Big Cypress National Preserve. Nineteen feet, exactly. That is several inches longer, but 90 pounds lighter, than any python caught before.

Nineteen feet is three times longer than a king bed. Or half the height of a standard wooden telephone pole. In fact, 19 feet is about the length of an adult male giraffe’s neck.

Impressive, although the length of this snake is less important than the total numbers of this invasive species that have invaded the Everglades. An estimated 250,000 Burmese pythons – a wild guess; nobody knows for sure – would need to be caught to perhaps rid the Everglades of the creatures.

Good luck with that, hunters. Burmese pythons are as at home in South Florida as they are in their native South Asia. Their camouflage is nearly perfect. They move really fast. They’re slippery when wet. And they bite really hard with really big fangs.

After the catch, Waleri and friends took it to the Nature Conservancy of Southwest Florida for an assessment.

"It's awesome to be able to make an impact on South Florida's environment. We love this ecosystem and try to preserve it as much as possible."
Naples resident and record-holding python wrangler Jake Waleria

The conservancy’s python experts assessed the snake, which measured 5.8 meters long and 56.7 kilograms, or a full 19 feet and 125 pounds, and confirmed Waleri’s new world record for the longest captured Burmese python.

The experts believe the snake is so long that it might be old enough to be among the first escapees from back in the ‘90s.

“We had a feeling that these snakes get this big and now we have clear evidence,” said Ian Easterling, a Nature Conservancy python researcher. “Her genetic material may prove valuable for an eventual understanding of the founding population of South Florida. “

Easterling is among the scientists at the conservancy who hold a different python record: they caught the heaviest one ever recorded in Florida last summer.

The female python, filled with 122 developing eggs, weighed 215 pounds. That’s about the same weight as an NFL running back.

Apex predator

The Burmese python should not be slithering about in the Florida Everglades, but is.

The pet trade was most likely responsible for first introducing the Burmese python to the Florida Everglades when traders released unsold snakes into the woods, as did people who bought one and the snake’s fast growth and voracious appetite outpaced its owner’s ability or desire to keep up with it.

Even if that were not the case, Hurricane Andrew in 1993 destroyed at least one exotic pet zoo near Miami that housed Burmese pythons, which were never seen again. Other pythons escaped from home cages during the chaos as well.

South Florida’s environment is not equipped to handle the species’ explosive growth in size, in range, and the many effects it has on the delicate ecosystem, even one as massive as the Everglades.

The Burmese python has risen to apex predator within just a few generations.

Its indiscriminate eating habits are wiping out entire swaths of prey such as marsh rabbits and cotton rats while disrupting the recoveries in the population of wading and ground-nesting birds like herons, egrets, and ibises by poaching their eggs and vulnerable nestlings.

Not even alligators are safe from pythons.

A Burmese python is a constrictor that squeezes the life out of its prey. Then the snake is able to dislocate and unhinge its jaws to consume large things. This allows them to engulf and swallow animals that are far larger than the size of their head.

That appears to be the way an 18-foot python was able to swallow the 5-foot-long gator that scientists discovered when performing a necropsy on the big snake.

‘It’s awesome’

Perhaps more impressive than the snake’s length is Waleri’s acrobatics while catching it.

A video of Waleri's record-breaking catch shows him tugging the long python by the tail to keep it up on a roadway as the snake tries to get away. The python, clearly upset at what is occurring to its tail, whips around and lunges at Waleri.

With matching speed, the 22-year-old python hunter grabs the snake with one hand just under its neck. The python opens its mouth wide hoping to sink its long fangs into Waleri, but the man gets his other hand around the snake’s neck and holds tights as the pair roll around on the roadway – and the python starts to coil up on Waleri’s body.

Other hunters pull the snake off Waleri, who is unharmed.

"It's awesome to be able to make an impact on South Florida's environment," he said after the catch in a news release. “We love this ecosystem and try to preserve it as much as possible."

Why are Bed Bath and Beyond stores in Southwest Florida closing?

The chain filed for bankruptcy in April and announced it would close all physical stores.

Bed Bath & Beyond, which was founded in 1971, had been warning of a potential bankruptcy since early January and had announced a series of job cuts and store closures in the past year.

The home goods retailer has experienced a decline in sales and struggled to attract shoppers in recent years.

What is Overstock Inc.?

Overstock is a popular online furniture and home retail store. After winning a $21.5 million auction for Bed Bath & Beyond’s intellectual property, the company is rebranding itself under the former's name.

Overstock announced in a press release last month it completed the acquisition process, changing its loyalty program and transitioning to the Bed Bath & Beyond domain.

“Bed Bath & Beyond is an iconic consumer brand, well-known in the home retail marketplace. The combination of our winning asset-light business model and the high awareness and loyalty of the Bed Bath & Beyond brand will improve the customer experience and position the company for accelerated market share growth, said Jonathan Johnson, chief executive officer of Overstock.

When will Bed Bath and Beyond online shopping return?

As of now, there is no date of when the name change will be adopted and online shoppers in the United States who visit Overstock’s website will be redirected to bedbathandbeyond.com

As of July 19, an image on Bed Bath and Beyond's website states: "bedbathandbeyond.com will return soon! Bed Bath and Beyond and buybuy BABY stores remain open to serve you."
