Common Types of Big Rig Truck Insurance in Ocala, FL

At Independence Insurance Agency, we offer several types of insurance coverage for local, intermediate, and long-haul trucking needs. Here are just a few categories of trucking insurance coverage that our agency offers.

As the foundation of your insurance policy, liability coverage is required by law in most states in the U.S. It provides coverage for damage or injuries caused to properties or other people if your 18-wheeler is responsible for the crash. Without liability coverage, it's almost impossible to drive a truck or run a trucking business without major legal consequences.

Having physical damage coverage is an essential component that shouldn't be overlooked. This insurance is responsible for covering the expenses related to repairing or replacing your truck in situations such as accidents, theft, vandalism, and other damaging events. By having this coverage, you can rest assured that your business won't be affected significantly by unexpected incidents, and you can continue running your operations smoothly even in challenging times.

For trucking companies, the goods they transport are crucial to their operations. To protect these goods from damage, loss, or theft while in transit, cargo insurance is essential. This coverage provides much-needed peace of mind for both you and your clients, allowing you to reimburse clients for any losses sustained while protecting your reputation and brand identity.

Non-Trucking Liability Insurance is designed to cover property damage or bodily injury that may occur during personal time when the driver/truck is not under dispatch. This coverage can be applied with or without a trailer and is added to a commercial policy as an endorsement.

While Independence Insurance Agency has built a reputation of excellence in serving the needs of truckers, we also offer general liability. Also known as Truckers General Liability, this coverage insures for bodily injuries or property damage that happen due to business activities that are NOT the cause of operating a truck. It covers accidents that occur in parking lots, rest stops, also while loading or unloading. General liability can also cover losses related to theft and vandalism. Most brokers and shippers will require this coverage to work with you.

Bobtail insurance is a type of coverage that is comparable to non-trucking liability, which is designed to offer protection when driving a truck without a trailer attached. This is commonly referred to as "bobtailing." With bobtail insurance, the tractor is covered at all times, even when it is not attached to a trailer, regardless of whether or not the truck is under dispatch.

Trailer interchange insurance is a must-have if you're involved in a trailer interchange agreement. This essential coverage offers protection for trailers owned by other parties that you're using under a contractual agreement. It covers damages caused by collisions, fire, theft, and vandalism, providing assurance to all parties involved.

Three plus 3 Safe Driving Tips to

Lower the Cost of Truck Insurance in Ocala, FL

Keeping your drivers safe on the road is crucial not only for their own well-being but also for the safety of other motorists and the financial stability of your business. The Department of Labor has identified the trucking industry as one of the most hazardous sectors in the U.S. In fact, trucking and logistics fleets are known for their high injury and fatality rates. By improving how safely your truckers drive, you can help reduce expenses related to claim payouts, accidents, and insurance premium hikes.

Whether you own a large fleet or you're the owner and operator of a single rig, keep these safe driving tips in mind to help lower your insurance costs.

Implement Preventative Maintenance Plans

Ensuring the safety of your drivers begins with the safety of their vehicles. Trucks and tractor-trailers that do not receive regular maintenance, such as oil and brake pad changes, are more likely to experience breakdowns while on the road. Telematics devices provide real-time insight into engine and odometer data, including fault codes.

This information enables your mechanics to create comprehensive preventative maintenance schedules based on mileage, history of previous breakdowns, days, and more. Additionally, they can receive immediate notifications for critical fault codes. By implementing routine maintenance and proactive repair schedules, you can ensure that your vehicles are in top condition, minimizing the likelihood of breakdowns, which can help reduce the cost of trucker insurance.

Practice Defensive Driving

This approach aims to mitigate the risk of fatal crashes and injuries by proactively identifying and responding to potentially dangerous situations and making informed decisions while driving. By adopting defensive driving techniques, drivers can reduce their likelihood of accidents, thereby minimizing the need for expensive repairs, claim payouts, and increased insurance premiums.

Some of the easiest ways for you or your drivers to practice safe driving include:

  • Be Wary of Blind Spots: Operating a reefer or tractor-trailer means driving high off of the ground, which can make visibility limited, especially in blind spots. To check your blind spot, look over your shoulder and out of your windows while changing lanes.
  • Be Ready for Emergencies on the Road: It's important for drivers to be ready for unexpected situations when driving, especially during long trips. They should be equipped to handle emergencies such as poor driving conditions or big rig breakdowns.
  • Use the Three-Second Rule: Truck drivers should try to maintain a three-second gap between their vehicle and the car in front of them. This means that the truck driver should reach a certain point on the road three seconds after the car in front of them has passed that same point.
  • Always Use Right and Left Turn Indicators: It's important for drivers to always use their turn signals when changing lanes or exiting highways, even if they don't see any other cars around. This is not only required by law, but it also reduces the chances of accidents occurring on the road.

Find Ways to Prevent Distracted Driving

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), distracted driving is the primary reason behind truck driver accidents. Any activity that takes a driver's attention away from the road or the steering wheel is considered distracted driving. Distractions can come in various forms, such as eating while driving or gazing at a billboard outside the window. However, the most frequent form of distracted driving is the use of cellphones, specifically texting while driving.

Assuming you or your driver's rigs are equipped with dual-facing cameras, try reviewing footage of an unsafe driving incident. Coach your drivers on ways to correct their unsafe behaviors or look up ways to do so yourself if you're the one operating the big rig. The bottom line is that when your drivers aren't distracted, they drive safer. And when they drive safer, the cost of 18-wheeler insurance in cityname, state can be reduced.

Lights, Santa, horses, oh my. Christmas returns to Ocala in Florida as the World Equestrian Center (WEC) presents a monthlong Winter Wonderland extravaganza. The third year for this spectacle of lights and good cheer brings guests and visitors together at this elegant equestrian event space and resort. Of course, the best way to enjoy the holiday season in Ocala is to book a long weekend or mid-week stay at The Equestrian Hotel, Ocala’s only AAA Four Diamond Resort. That’s exactly what I did with my family last December.

The Equestrian Hotel features 248 stylishly appointed rooms and suites, many which overlook the Grand Arena. Hotel amenities include a state-of-the-art fitness center, a full-service salon and spa and outdoor swimming pool (open seasonally).

A few days before Christmas Eve, I met my dad and sisters in the lobby of the hotel. We hadn’t seen each other in a few months, so reuniting amidst the glow of twinkling lights while sipping on maple syrup old fashioneds was a fitting way to ease into the trip. My sisters brought their young children, 3 girls under the age of 3, who screamed with delight at the holiday décor.

The grand lobby features 20-foot ceilings, crystal chandeliers and a floor-to-ceiling fireplace, with mahogany and Italian porcelain finishes throughout. The large elevator lobbies showcase the work of local and regional artists. The refined design, with its equestrian-inspired details, evokes a legacy hotel in Europe.

Winter Wonderland Lights Up on November 24

Each year, over one million twinkling lights illuminate the WEC Grand Plaza. This year, the lights start from Friday, November 24 through Saturday, December 23, between 5pm and 9pm in the lead-up to Christmas Eve. Special holiday entertainment will amuse families throughout the week and weekend. Hotel guests, of course, don’t pay a fee for parking; outside visitors will be responsible for a $10 parking fee per vehicle from Monday through Thursday and a $30 parking fee per vehicle from Friday through Sunday, applicable from 3pm to 9pm. Guests can also purchase a monthly parking pass for $200 that will be valid for parking throughout the entire monthlong Winter Wonderland event.

What to Expect: Holiday Décor, Entertainment, and Festive Food

Last year was my first visit to WEC and its luxury resort. I knew of the property after covering its excellent wine and equestrian program for Wine Enthusiast in a round-up of horse ranches and related properties with deep cellars. Given our family’s love of horseback riding (my sister keeps horses in Florida) and wine, the horse-themed hotel seemed a great fit for the season’s opening festivities.

We strolled out to the Grand Plaza with no expectations, the perfect way to encounter the spectacular holiday installations, including a magical 45-foot walk-through Christmas tree, a charming lighted carriage, and plenty of photo-friendly décor. My 3 nieces squealed with delight, racing around, through, and under the various twinkling designs.

This year, the Winter Wonderland weekend lineup brings back an array of entertainment, featuring Toy Soldiers, circus performers, and princesses and superheroes. Guests can meet Santa Claus and even send letters to the North Pole, or lend their visage to caricaturists and face painters, while delighting in skilled balloon artists stationed throughout the plaza.

As for food, there was an array of holiday bites last year that return on weekends in 2023. Expect a North Pole Bakery selling seasonal treats like gingerbread cookies, pumpkin bread, and pies. Other festive food tents include wood-burning pizzas, a French fry station, and the over-the-top Wondrous Hot Chocolate stop, created by Miss Tilly’s Lollipops.

Families with youngster or a preference for morning events can join the fun with a ticketed experience on the terrace at The Equestrian Hotel. Breakfast with Santa runs December 2, 9, 16, 17 and 23, and will feature French toast and buttermilk pancakes, a Santa-led stories, and a special gift from the North Pole resident himself.

Holiday Activities and Shopping at WEC

Last season, we spent 2 nights at the resort which allowed us multiple visits to Winter Wonderland, as well as the ability to partake in resort festivities and dine at hotel’s excellent restaurants. This year, a few activities return like the Ugly Sweater Contests at Yellow Pony Pub & Garden on Thursday evenings, with winners chosen at 8pm. On December 2 runners and their cheerleaders can join the Tinsel Trot 5K Run and Walk starting at 7pm. Participants are encouraged to don festive dress.

Like most people, I waited until he last minute to purchase gifts for my nieces. I blame the airlines for the endless nickel-and-diming on bags. Fortunately, the shops at WEC saved the day with multiple opportunities to browse at the resort’s vendors and retailers, including the perennially popular Mr. Pickles & Sailor Bear Toy Shoppe. I nabbed a tea set, books, a stuffed hose, and a puzzle for my nieces who unknowingly picked out their own gifts as they pulled me through the busy store. I even scored an early Christmas gift for myself: a pair of waterproof boots from Ariat on sale through December.

When it comes to hurricanes, the national media usually focuses on Florida towns that suffer major hits. But the Wall Street Journal has just published a long article about Ocala/Marion County for the opposite reason — because the area usually escapes hurricane damage.

The article, which went online Wednesday night and was in print on Friday, describes this area's relatively low risk of flooding, hurricanes and wind damage. It also highlights Ocala/Marion's natural beauty, horse farms, relatively low housing prices and friendly residents. All those factors and more are reasons people cite for moving here from other, more weather-exposed parts of Florida, the article notes.

The online headline: "Why this Florida city is a safe haven from hurricanes."

The Daily Mail from the United Kingdom picked up on the WSJ story and published a story of its own, headlined "Why is THIS Florida city a 'safe haven' from hurricanes while others in the state struggle to insure their storm-battered properties?"

More local business news:Longtime Ocala family business has been acquired by Texas-based national giant

Exposure like this "keeps Ocala on a lot of people's radars," said Bartow McDonald, managing director of Ocala-based SVN | McDonald & Company, which specializes in land and commercial real estate.

"People are constantly on the search for the next piece of paradise," McDonald said, and Ocala checks a lot of the boxes they are looking to fill.

Kevin Sheilley, president and CEO of the Ocala Metro Chamber & Economic Partnership (CEP), also was happy to read the story.

"We are very pleased to see the Wall Street Journal featuring Ocala as a 'save haven' from severe climate events," he said. "We know this is important to families looking to relocate to our community but also to businesses. In fact, it is now part of our marketing to highlight the weather facts we enjoy here compared to other communities."

What is the best internet provider in Ocala?

Cox is the best internet service provider in Ocala, offering some of the lowest starting prices in the city and the fastest speeds by far. There’s plenty to quibble about with Cox -- slow upload speeds, price increases and data caps -- but it’s essentially the only game in town for high-speed internet.

If you’re looking for the lowest price, T-Mobile Home Internet is our pick for the cheapest internet in Ocala. True, it has the same $50 starting price as Cox, but T-Mobile offers a price-lock guarantee, includes equipment in the monthly price and offers unlimited data.

After Cox and T-Mobile, there’s a significant dropoff to our third pick, CenturyLink. The DSL provider offers speeds up to 80Mbps in Ocala -- enough for smaller households, but firmly on the slow side -- and all plans cost $55 a month, no matter which speed you get.

Our methodology

CNET considers speeds, pricing, customer service and overall value to recommend the best internet service in Ocala across many categories. Our evaluation includes referencing a proprietary database built over years of reviewing internet services. We validate that against provider information by spot-checking local addresses for service availability. We also do a close read of providers' terms and conditions and, when needed, will call ISPs to verify the details.

Despite our efforts to find the most recent and accurate information, our process has some limitations you should know about. Pricing and speed data are variable: certain addresses may qualify for different tiers of service, and monthly costs may vary, even within a city. The best way to identify your particular options is to plug your address into a provider's website.

Also, the prices, speed and other information listed above and in the provider cards below may differ from what we found in our research. The cards display the full range of a provider's pricing and speed across the US, according to our database of plan information provided directly by ISPs, while the text is specific to what's available in Ocala. The prices referenced within this article's text come from our research and include applicable discounts for setting up automatic payments each month -- a standard industry offering. Other discounts and promotions might also be available for things like signing a term contract or bundling with multiple services.

Best internet provider in Ocala, FL

Our take - Cox is the only internet provider in Ocala that offers a cable or fiber connection, making it an easy choice for our top pick. It has a wide array of plans available in the area, with speeds up to 2,000Mbps and prices starting at $50 a month. Because it’s a cable internet provider, upload speeds are much lower than download, which could be an issue if you work from home or play games online. But since there are no true fiber providers in Ocala, this will be an issue with every provider. All plans include equipment for free for the first two years, and most also guarantee prices for two years.

Our take - Technically, T-Mobile and Cox have the same starting price -- $50 a month -- but with T-Mobile, you’ll never have to worry about your price increasing. The fixed wireless provider offers download speeds up to 245Mbps and upload speeds up to 31Mbps, and everything you need is included in the base price. While T-Mobile’s speeds don’t go as high as Cox’s, they’re still fast enough for most people: T-Mobile received a score of 73/100 from the American Customer Satisfaction Index, compared to 64/100 for Cox.

Best DSL internet in Ocala, FL

Our take - I wouldn’t typically recommend DSL internet -- the technology provides significantly slower speeds than cable, fiber or 5G home internet. Still, it’s a decent backup option in Ocala if you can’t get Cox or T-Mobile. CenturyLink’s DSL plans go up to 100Mbps download speeds, but the speeds you’ll have access to depend on your address. After plugging in a few Ocala addresses, the highest speed I saw was 80Mbps. All CenturyLink DSL plans cost $55 a month, no matter what speed you get, plus $15 a month if you rent a modem.

How to find internet deals and promotions in Ocala

What’s a good internet speed?

Most internet connection plans can now handle basic productivity and communication tasks. If you're looking for an internet plan that can accommodate videoconferencing, streaming video or gaming, you'll have a better experience with a more robust connection. Here's an overview of the recommended minimum download speeds for various applications, according to the FCC. Note that these are only guidelines -- and that internet speed, service and performance vary by connection type, provider and address.

For more information, refer to our guide on how much internet speed you really need.

How CNET chose the best internet providers in Ocala

Internet service providers are numerous and regional. Unlike the latest smartphone, laptop, router or kitchen tool, it’s impractical to personally test every ISP in a given city. So what’s our approach? We start by researching the pricing, availability and speed information, drawing on our own historical ISP data, the provider sites and mapping information from the Federal Communications Commission at FCC.gov.

But it doesn’t end there. We go to the FCC’s website to check our data and ensure we consider every ISP that provides service in an area. We also input local addresses on provider websites to find specific options for residents. We look at sources, including the American Customer Satisfaction Index and J.D. Power, to evaluate how happy customers are with an ISP’s service. ISP plans and prices are subject to frequent changes; all information provided is accurate as of publication.

Once we have this localized information, we ask three main questions:

While the answer to those questions is often layered and complex, the providers who come closest to “yes” on all three are the ones we recommend. When it comes to selecting the cheapest internet service, we look for the plans with the lowest monthly fee, though we also factor in things like price increases, equipment fees and contracts. Choosing the fastest internet service is relatively straightforward. We look at advertised upload and download speeds and consider real-world speed data from sources like Ookla and FCC reports.

OCALA, Fla. - Parents in Ocala, Florida are upset and angry over how a shooting involving a Marion County sheriff's deputy played out on Tuesday night.

The deputy pulled 26-year-old Rasheem Edwards over near the corner of Emerald and Maricamp roads. The sheriff's office says the man was driving an unregistered dirt bike without any lights on. Deputies say Edwards tried to run away.

"While he was running away, he tried reaching for a weapon that he had on him. He pulls out a weapon out as if he was to attack the deputy with a firearm. When he does, it comes flying out of his grip and lands on the ground," Lieutenant Paul Bloom said.

Lt. Bloom said Edwards got down to pick up the gun and tried again to point it at the deputy.

"The deputy at that point backs up a few steps and unfortunately has to shoot him to save his own life," Bloom said.

The shooting happened not far from where youth sports were practicing Tuesday night. Parents tell FOX 35, it was very traumatizing what they and their kids witnessed and experienced.

Tara Cone was on her way to pick up her daughter from cheer practice when she got a call from her daughter about what happened.

"As a parent, your heart drops, your heart drops," she said.

On Wednesday night, the sheriff's office held a community meeting to provide grief and resources for families that were impacted by the shooting. Parents told FOX 35, they walked away more frustrated than they expected.

Nekisha Stroud said she was under the impression they'd be able to ask more questions about what happened. She was there with her son when gunshots rang out.

"I'm pissed off, traumatized, it's the lies for me, I was tossing and turning I couldn't really get sleep last night," Stroud said.

Lindsey Gonzalez was at the sports field with her son, he was hiding in the floorboard of her car when shots rang out.

"I was stuck I couldn't get out, I was stuck in my car with my child on the floorboard and gunshots were going off. My son was on the floorboard telling me, please leave, please leave," Gonzalez said.

Both Gonzalez and Stroud said because the shooting was so close to so many kids, they feared kids could have been hurt. They both want to see body camera videos to better understand why deputies needed to use deadly force in this situation.

Lt. Bloom said there is body camera video, but it can't be released right now since it's an active investigation. He said once it does get released, it will give parents a better idea as to why they had to use deadly force.

For now, football practices won't be held on that field near where the shooting happened. Lt. Bloom said where the shooting happened was not where anyone wanted it to happen.

"He carelessly came in there where children were, where they were practicing not too far away. This could have been much, much worse. Unfortunately what these children are dealing with now impacts these kids mental health, they're well-being"

New market additions follows significant investment made in franchisee Reliable Residential earlier this year to grow Precision Garage Door Service and other Neighborly brands

NEW YORK, Jan. 16, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Franchise Equity Partners (FEP), a private investment firm on a mission to create long-term partnerships with quality franchisees and franchisors, today announced the acquisition of Precision Garage Door Service franchise operations in Orlando and Ocala, Florida. The deal is part of FEP's partnership with management of Reliable Residential HoldCo ("Reliable Residential") announced in October of 2023. Reliable Residential is one of the largest Neighborly franchisees, with existing Precision Garage Door Service operations in Clearwater, FL, Columbus, OH and Oklahoma City, OK. This transaction adds the contiguous Orlando and Ocala markets to Reliable Residential's portfolio, showcasing FEP's commitment to investing in operations throughout Florida.

"The completion of this deal strengthens our relationship with Precision Garage Door Service and aligns with our goal of establishing a robust foothold in the Florida market," said Michael Esposito, Founding Partner of Franchise Equity Partners.

"Our expanded investment in Reliable Residential will help grow their current Precision Garage Door Service platform in markets including Orlando and Ocala. Reliable Residential is poised for further strategic growth and we're excited about the trajectory of our partnership. This is just the beginning and we look forward to future opportunities."

The leading garage door franchise with more than 100 locations nationwide, Precision Garage Door Service was acquired by Neighborly in 2020 and has grown considerably under the home services company's vision. Precision Garage Door Service has a clear competitive advantage due to lead generation, technology, inventory, sales processes, speed to service customers, and the ability to attract talent. FEP will continue helping the brand and its largest franchisee expand further in 2024.

With FEP's support, Precision Garage Door Service can earn market share in growing markets like Orlando and Ocala. These thriving Florida cities feature an expanding population, which presents a lucrative opportunity for home services brands.

"This deal is right on par with our strategy and thesis at the outset," said Carlos Morales, President, Reliable Residential. "We chose FEP as a value-added partner because they understand franchise businesses and the unique challenges and opportunities we face. We've set a solid foundation since partnering in October and look forward to growing our presence across Florida and in other key markets."

The partnership with Reliable Residential and Precision Garage Door Service is just the beginning for FEP in the home services space. The private investment firm has plans to invest in other Neighborly brands and will help the world's largest home services company expand in key markets.

MidCap Financial and HPS provided debt financing to help complete the Orlando and Ocala market transaction. Davis Wright Tremaine LLP served as legal counsel to FEP.
