Hill accused of exploiting 96-year-old woman out of more than $100,000
ORLANDO, Fla. – A grand jury is now investigating allegations that Orlando City Commissioner Regina Hill exploited an elderly woman out of more than $100,000.
Mayor Buddy Dyer confirmed the investigation to News 6 during an interview on Tuesday.
“We don’t have any stance. We know there’s been a grand jury that’s been convened. The information that we have is basically what’s been in the news,” he said.
News 6 confirmed last week that Hill was under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
According to documents submitted in court, FDLE was investigating whether Hill established a power of attorney over a 96-year-old woman and secured a mortgage for a home in the Lake Mann Estates area of Orlando, without the woman’s knowledge.
Investigators believe Hill’s son and his girlfriend live in the home, while Hill resided in a home in the Washington Shores neighborhood that once belonged to the elderly woman’s parents — and was not paying rent.
According to the documents, Hill also used more than $100,000 of the woman’s cash and credit cards to buy perfume, clothing, IV vitamins, a facelift, a trip to Miami, dental surgery and car insurance.
The FDLE documents show the agency received a tip last year from a former aide of Hill’s who had been fired from their job. An FDLE spokesperson said they are still investigating the claims and will not comment on the case.
Hill has not been charged or arrested.
She had no comment for News 6, and she referred us to her attorney who has not returned a request for a comment.
The documents were part of a petition filed by the woman’s attorneys to keep Hill away from the woman’s finances and properties.
A hearing in that case is set for Wednesday afternoon.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings and commissioners agreed Tuesday to pay nearly the $52,000 onePULSE Foundation owes in property taxes on the once-planned site of the National Pulse Memorial and Museum.

But while the county put taxpayers on the hook for onePULSE’s debt, the county says the Foundation is not releasing financial records to orange county officials.
9 investigates first broke the story on Eyewitness News at 6 two weeks ago that onePULSE had not turned over financial documents that Orange County request four months ago.
Mayor Jerry Demings told 9 Investigates he learned of this around the same time we reported it.
Demings says Orange County will press the now-dissolved onePULSE Foundation to turn over its bank statements and board meeting minutes.

“We are pursuing every lawful means to recover whatever we can—including records,” Demings said.
The county originally asked for the records in November. The documents would shed some light on how the foundation operated and internal decisions made by the board.
But onePULSE has claimed it can’t turn over those records.
“What do you think it says that the onePULSE is making it difficult for the county to get any records out of them?,” reporter Ashlyn Webb asked Commissioner Mayra Uribe.

“What are you trying to hide? Give us the info. There’s nothing you guys can do at this time. You’re dissolved. Give us the info,” Uribe said.
The mayor’s comment is a 180 from what the county Comptroller’s office told us two weeks ago. The Comptroller’s Office said it was no longer seeking the records after onePULSE said it didn’t have the staff to produce the records. The Foundation said the county could inspect them in person.
Comptroller Phil Diamond explained Tuesday why his office felt “uncomfortable” and refused.
“We don’t want to be in a situation where if there are missing records, we don’t want to be responsible for the fact there might have already been missing record,” Diamond said.

Mayor Demings says the county will do its due diligence even if that means hiring a firm to recover the records from onePULSE Foundation.
“We are trying to make certain that wejust don’t take the excuse that [onePULSE] doesn’t have anybody to pull [the records],” Demings said.
Diamond told Channel 9 the documents should be easily retrievable for the nonprofit, particularly bank statements.
OnePULSE employees agreed and added the Foundation stored board meeting minutes on a digital platform that the Foundation would be able to share to the county.

Boxer and Clover, named after the duo of cart horses in George Orwell’s Animal Farm, took the space formerly belonging to the Farm & Haus stall. The menu features Southern barbecue staples such as brisket, pork butt, chicken thighs, ribs, collards, mac & cheese and homemade pies — although it’s set to dish out much more.
“I’m not labeling this barbecue. I'm sure others will do that for me. I don't see it as Texas barbecue, or North Carolina barbecue, or anywhere else for that matter,” Hinckley states on the Boxer and Clover website.
Those who want to stop in and try for themselves should do so in the next six months, because that may be as long as this concept will be there. After that, Hinckley will consider extending his stay or going for a more permanent approach.
“I buy good meat from legit farms. I rub it with raw natural sea salt, pepper, garlic and chili. Then I smoke it for a long time over lump charcoal, oak and fruitwood. Somehow the final product seems greater than the sum of those parts,” Hinckley says.

Residents say project too big, concerned about traffic and schools
ORLANDO, Fla. – Commissioners in Orange County agreed Tuesday to send a plan for an affordable housing project that would be built by Walt Disney World onto the next step.
Commissioners heard public input on the project from a divided community of supporters who want more affordable housing and critics who worry about the existing conditions in the growing Horizon West area where the development would be built.
In the end, they voted 4-2 to transmit the housing plan to the state for review.
Disney wants to build a 1,400-unit “attainable housing” development off Hartzog Road in west Orange County, not far from Flamingo Crossings. Over 1,000 of the units are supposed to meet the county’s definition of affordable housing. Disney is allocating 80 acres of its land for the project.
A Walt Disney World Resort spokesperson released a statement on Tuesday evening that read:
“We are responding to Orange County leadership’s call to bring more positive change to our community and have a plan that will make a meaningful impact. We are pleased with tonight’s vote and look forward to continuing our efforts to bring affordable housing to Central Florida.”

The project has the support of several groups, including the Orlando Regional Realtor Association, which said in a statement Monday that the project will increase the area’s housing supply and diversify it.

However, residents in the Horizon West area have piled into community meetings in the last few months to voice their displeasure with the project, which they said will add to traffic woes and clog already-crowded streets.
Viewers from the area have also written in to WKMG to complain about the project.
“Horizon West traffic is a nightmare, yesterday people were stuck on Avalon Road for hours and Disney wants to add 1,400 apartments to this mess,” one person wrote to News 6 on March 8.
The Board of Zoning Adjustment agreed to recommend the project, despite the complaints, on a 4-3 vote earlier this month.
The Florida Department of Commerce and other agencies in Tallahassee will review the plan, which could take several months.
The Orange County Commission will then need to vote on a final approval at a later date.
