The city marked another milestone on Tuesday, March 5, by making a significant contribution of $926,808 towards Second Harvest’s Capital Campaign as a way to extend its support to the organization. The contribution underscores the city’s collective dedication to making a meaningful impact and ensuring that no one in the community experiences hunger.

For the safety of our staff and scholars, Scintilla Charter Academy will be closed today. Many of our families and staff are without power and also facing road blockages that prevent them from being able to travel safely to school. At this time we have been advised by our EMA that more severe weather is headed our way which could impact the safety of our scholars. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing all of our scholars tomorrow.
Lowndes County Schools is in session today. We have been in communication with emergency responders as some areas of our community within the city limits received damage from the storm during the night. Our school buses are taking precautions and avoiding impacted areas. Please use the Here Comes the Bus app to follow any delays. If you travel through the city, please follow EMA Lowndes to know the areas and major intersections to avoid. Anyone who cannot travel safely to school will be excused.
Valdosta City Schools
Overnight storms have downed trees in the city, making several school routes impassable. In addition, there are massive power outages that are impacting some of our schools and homes.
Valdosta City Schools will be closed for Wednesday, March 27, 2024. Students will be excused for this absence, and there will be no after school activities today.
School is expected to resume on Thursday, March 28, 2024. Please be careful and stay safe.

VALDOSTA — Dr. Willie Houseal discusses his life and experience as a local civil rights and historic preservation leader at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in Valdosta State University’s Odum Library Auditorium. This Black History Month presentation is open to the public.
Born and raised in Valdosta, Houseal was instrumental in changing the way Valdosta city leaders are elected, moving the process from an at-large voting system to the district-based voting system in place today. He went on to serve the residents of District 1 on the Valdosta City Council from 1985 to 1989, where he helped facilitate changes to the city’s hiring practices, as well as the city’s parks, recreation, and beautification efforts.
Houseal graduated from Pinevale High School and served more than 10 years in the United States Air Force, including one year in Vietnam. He continued his education through the doctoral level at various institutions of higher education, including VSU, where he earned a Master of Education and an Education Specialist, both in the area of educational administration and supervision.
He went on to serve nearly three decades in public education as a teacher and tutor with Lowndes County Schools and as an administrator with Brooks County Schools, where he retired as principal of North Brooks Elementary School in 2002. He then began working as an adjunct professor of human resource management at Park University and was later appointed interim director for the Moody Air Force Base campus’s Center for Distance Learning.
Houseal is most proud of every opportunity he has had to mentor children, teens, and young adults. He enjoys helping community youth develop the skills needed to unlock their full potential and embrace life with confidence and resilience. His two books — “The Power of Self-Esteem: Using It All to Get It All” and “The Power of Positive Self-Esteem: Developing, Implementing, and Sustaining” — were inspired by his commitment to helping others live their best life.
Houseal continues to lead efforts to preserve the history of Southside Valdosta and Pinevale High School and recently partnered with VSU Archives and Special Collections’ new Community Archives Digitization, Access, and Preservation Partnership project, which is working to make South Georgia history more accessible to everyone.
The Georgia House of Representatives recognized Houseal for outstanding community service in March 2022. That same month the City of Valdosta named Willie Houseal Drive in honor of his lasting impact on the community.

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - An American Idol finalist and South Georgia native will perform at the 2024 Levitt AMP Valdosta Music Series.
Douglasville native Megan Danielle is a Christian/Country music artist who finished as the runner-up on the 21st season of American Idol, according to a release.
She has been performing live since she was 15 years old and says music has always been a strong presence in her life.
“Since I was a little girl, I have always enjoyed listening to music and singing along to anything I’d hear,” Danielle said. “I was always so shy to pursue it but eventually around the age of 15, I booked my own show at a restaurant in Douglasville.”
In 2020, she competed on The Voice, and in 2022, she auditioned for American Idol after a record producer reached out to her on Instagram. During her time on the singing competition show, she showcased her talents inspired by a wide variety of musical influences including Miranda Lambert, Fleetwood Mac, Lauren Daigle, and Patty Griffin, among others.
In 2023, Danielle’s debut single “Dream Girl” was released. She attributed her hard work and success to her faith and the influence of her late grandfather. The release said Danielle’s grandfather is cited as the person who “most encouraged her to live up to her potential, the 21-year-old is excited to develop her musical career by drawing on a lifetime of transformative experiences.”
She is one of 10 free, live performances in the 2024 Levitt AMP Valdosta Music Series. Megan will be performing on March 29.

I said to my wife with a smile. VSU had a number of GRSP students attending, in any given year. Some of them were in a suite of dorm rooms with other GRSP students, others were just in the general student room population.
It just so happened that our club’s student, Triin, was in a four-person suite with three other students, one of whom happened to also be a GRSP student, sponsored by Valdosta-area Rotary Clubs.
Maria was from Cartegena, Colombia; her father was a doctor, but only middle-class, even by Colombian standards.
She actually showed more appreciation for what we tried to do for the two of them, that year, so we naturally grew closer to her.
We still hear from Maria to this day.
After Maria’s year at VSU through the GRSP scholarship was up, she managed to find other scholarships that enabled her to finish her undergraduate degree, and other scholarships that enabled her to go on for a graduate degree, at Texas Christian University, for two years. I was so proud of her!
Then I got an email from her, after she got her master’s, saying she had applied for, and been awarded, a summer internship with a United Nations agency in Washington, DC. Her problem was, it did not include housing, so she was trying to find an affordable place to live that was near a bus or train line, as she did not have a car and her dad could not afford to buy her one. She said she was looking at going to “Craig’s List” to see if she could find an apartment that was close to a bus line.
That’s when I told her to hold on, and let me send a few emails to friends I had in the area.
I was eventually able to connect her with a college friend of mine who lived in Abington, who knew a couple through his church, whose daughters were gone for the summer, and were happy to take her in – at no cost, even though she was willing to do housekeeping or babysitting to pay for her rent.
What an awesome answer to my prayer! It was a wonderful summer for both her and the family she stayed with. I was so glad she had sent me that email, and that I knew someone who knew someone who was able to help.
“The Power of Rotary!” I have often been amazed at the power those connections can bring.
The last I heard from her, she had gone back to Colombia, gotten a good job with a shipping company, and married to a wonderful young man.
I am so happy that she too applied for that GRSP scholarship, and took the chance of coming to this country, not really knowing what she would find; and -- by happenstance, became a suitemate with Triin from Estonia – and thus got to be friends with me and my wife, through Rotary. We were doubly blessed, that year. And continue to be blessed, by the many and various connections that Rotary brings us.
It is a good feeling to know that our small personal efforts, here and there, can wind up making a big difference in someone else’s life. Even moreso when that person lives halfway around the globe!
