WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) – The Bellefont Plantation home, a historic building in Washington, burned in a fire Tuesday night in what Beaufort County officials are calling a “total loss.”
Bellefont lived many lives. It was a cotton plantation in the 1700s and changed hands multiple times before it became the Hodges family-run farm in the 1860s, said owner Phyllis Hodges Boyd. The building later found new use as an event venue she added.
To Boyd, it was always Grandma’s house.
“I feel her all over the house, I feel my family all over that house, all her children were born in the house. My dad was born in the house,” Boyd said.
Her dad was one of 13 children born in the house to help run the farm and grow tobacco. Boyd got the home in the early 1990s and spent years renovating, she said.
The little white house up the lane brought the community together with people holding their weddings, baby showers and family gatherings within its walls.
“A lot of people would talk about … they would remember driving by and seeing the pretty house up the lane,” Boyd said. “It was a way to connect our little community and make it stronger.”
Stories and memories are all that is left.
Around 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Beaufort County officials said first responders from surrounding areas were called in to combat a fire.
“The fire was declared a total loss,” Beaufort County Communications Director Brandon Tester said.
No one was injured, Tester said. The investigation to determine the cause is ongoing.
“We’re still investigating to determine the cause and origin and hopefully we’ll be able to find those once the investigation concludes,” Tester said.
Boyd learned Bellefont was on fire from a neighbor.
“When I got there and I saw it’s on fire, I couldn’t believe it,” she said.
This is not Bellefont’s first fire. During the renovations in the 1990s, Boyd said someone intentionally set the porch on fire.
“Either way it would be hard. I don’t like the thought of this being intentional again. Because of the bad weather, I’m waiting to see what the reports are,” Boyd said.
For Boyd, the home, memories and Grandma live on.
“I think a lot of the Hodges were with me last night because they all loved our home,” Boyd said.“I have so many people that have come and fallen in love with Bellefont, and I want everybody to when they see this house.”

Goats clean up historic Washington cemetery as preservation efforts continue

WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) - A pack of goats just spent the last two weeks chewing and gnawing their way toward cleaning up a historic cemetery tied to the founding of the city of Washington.
Forty-two goats were dropped off at the 260-year-old Sycamore Cemetery of Bonner Hill Plantation in Washington by a business called “Goats on the Go” based out of Raleigh. They spent nearly two weeks at the burial site in a fenced-in area.
“We decided to give the goats a bit more time to clear out some of the areas. They weren’t preferencing and we are mostly happy with how they did in terms of thinning out most of the vegetation. For some of the ground cover they weren’t too partial to they nibbled and dabbled but they decided this was not their favorite thing to eat,” Director of Goats on the Go, Stephen Paul said.
The goal was for the goats to eat away overgrown vegetation so that ground-penetrating radar could then be used to map out the graves hidden within. The hopes are that would then lead them to discover not only who is buried there and their ties to Washington but to also discover more meaning behind the city.
Descendant of the Bonners, Steve Bonner, has been the heart of this project and now has the next steps mapped out.
“The next step is to get tree services to come in and work on the tree and brush issues that we have along the perimeter of the cemetery. That will enable us to have more access to the center of the cemetery. We are going to go in with probes and find fallen headstones with metal probes and uncover and restore those and once we get it cleared out well enough then we will be able to come back with ground-penetrating radar and map out the graves that are in there,” Bonner said.
When doing the initial investigation and planning for this project, family organizers were only certain of around five graves in the burial site, but now they are thinking there are upwards of 17 or more graves to be discovered.

WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) - An Eastern Carolina city is welcoming a new business on one block of Main Street for the first time in nearly a century.
Little Inn in Washington is opening its door to guests after their year-and-a-half project. WITN covered their groundbreaking in 2021.
Now, Washington offers hospitality and a place to stay in the heart of their historic downtown.
Owner Felicia Huggins says she saw the need for a place to welcome more visitors from renting out her two Airbnbs next door.
After generations of the family living in the area, Huggins decided to bring this 10-room boutique inn to Main Street.
The inn was built from the ground up on a vacant lot where a restaurant burnt down in the 60s.
“Because of the offset of the building, no one else could really build on it,” said Huggins. “We wanted to do something with the lot, and we were inspired by an inn that we stayed at, and bringing the inn to Washington that we have been talking about for years that we needed one, and we just said let’s do it, and we’re people to do it, so we did.”
Many community members invested in bringing the establishment into fruition, including the Historic Preservation Commission and city leaders. Mayor Donald Sadler says bringing this inn to the city was much-needed.
Mayor Sadler shared, “We have been discovered by so many people that come to visit Washington, so this will be a great addition to our city in Pamlico. Washington has a lot of rich history, so it’s great to revitalize this building and continue the history.”
All the rooms here are named after the creeks of Pamlico River to deliver the feel of the harbor area in Beaufort County.
Little Inn was built with Charleston-style construction with long covered porches, utilizing the space they could work with.
Huggins says the price ranges for the rooms are determined by other local chain inns.
She added they expect a lot of tourists from restaurants and weddings in the area. Four-legged friends are welcome to stay as well.
