Commercial Truck Insurance in Winter Park, FL

  • Let's face it - truckers in America have always been the backbone of our great country. They still are in modern times. On any given day, thousands of trucks traverse our highways and local roads, delivering goods and products on time so that businesses and consumers have what they need to live life. And while commercial trucking can be an incredibly lucrative way to make a living and put food on the table, it can also be risky and expensive.
  • Whether you're the owner of a fleet, an independent trucker, or have a business that uses big rigs to transport goods, you need commercial trucking insurance to protect you and your client's investments, shield you from liability, and more.
  • That's where working with a reliable truck insurance agency comes into play. Unfortunately, for many commercial truck insurance providers, serving the needs of truckers is low on the proverbial totem pole. At Independence Insurance Agency, nothing could be further from the truth.

Common Types of Big Rig Truck Insurance in Winter Park, FL

At Independence Insurance Agency, we offer several types of insurance coverage for local, intermediate, and long-haul trucking needs. Here are just a few categories of trucking insurance coverage that our agency offers.

As the foundation of your insurance policy, liability coverage is required by law in most states in the U.S. It provides coverage for damage or injuries caused to properties or other people if your 18-wheeler is responsible for the crash. Without liability coverage, it's almost impossible to drive a truck or run a trucking business without major legal consequences.

Having physical damage coverage is an essential component that shouldn't be overlooked. This insurance is responsible for covering the expenses related to repairing or replacing your truck in situations such as accidents, theft, vandalism, and other damaging events. By having this coverage, you can rest assured that your business won't be affected significantly by unexpected incidents, and you can continue running your operations smoothly even in challenging times.

For trucking companies, the goods they transport are crucial to their operations. To protect these goods from damage, loss, or theft while in transit, cargo insurance is essential. This coverage provides much-needed peace of mind for both you and your clients, allowing you to reimburse clients for any losses sustained while protecting your reputation and brand identity.

Non-Trucking Liability Insurance is designed to cover property damage or bodily injury that may occur during personal time when the driver/truck is not under dispatch. This coverage can be applied with or without a trailer and is added to a commercial policy as an endorsement.

While Independence Insurance Agency has built a reputation of excellence in serving the needs of truckers, we also offer general liability. Also known as Truckers General Liability, this coverage insures for bodily injuries or property damage that happen due to business activities that are NOT the cause of operating a truck. It covers accidents that occur in parking lots, rest stops, also while loading or unloading. General liability can also cover losses related to theft and vandalism. Most brokers and shippers will require this coverage to work with you.

Bobtail insurance is a type of coverage that is comparable to non-trucking liability, which is designed to offer protection when driving a truck without a trailer attached. This is commonly referred to as "bobtailing." With bobtail insurance, the tractor is covered at all times, even when it is not attached to a trailer, regardless of whether or not the truck is under dispatch.

Trailer interchange insurance is a must-have if you're involved in a trailer interchange agreement. This essential coverage offers protection for trailers owned by other parties that you're using under a contractual agreement. It covers damages caused by collisions, fire, theft, and vandalism, providing assurance to all parties involved.

Three plus 3 Safe Driving Tips to

Lower the Cost of Truck Insurance in Winter Park, FL

Keeping your drivers safe on the road is crucial not only for their own well-being but also for the safety of other motorists and the financial stability of your business. The Department of Labor has identified the trucking industry as one of the most hazardous sectors in the U.S. In fact, trucking and logistics fleets are known for their high injury and fatality rates. By improving how safely your truckers drive, you can help reduce expenses related to claim payouts, accidents, and insurance premium hikes.

Whether you own a large fleet or you're the owner and operator of a single rig, keep these safe driving tips in mind to help lower your insurance costs.

Implement Preventative Maintenance Plans

Ensuring the safety of your drivers begins with the safety of their vehicles. Trucks and tractor-trailers that do not receive regular maintenance, such as oil and brake pad changes, are more likely to experience breakdowns while on the road. Telematics devices provide real-time insight into engine and odometer data, including fault codes.

This information enables your mechanics to create comprehensive preventative maintenance schedules based on mileage, history of previous breakdowns, days, and more. Additionally, they can receive immediate notifications for critical fault codes. By implementing routine maintenance and proactive repair schedules, you can ensure that your vehicles are in top condition, minimizing the likelihood of breakdowns, which can help reduce the cost of trucker insurance.

Practice Defensive Driving

This approach aims to mitigate the risk of fatal crashes and injuries by proactively identifying and responding to potentially dangerous situations and making informed decisions while driving. By adopting defensive driving techniques, drivers can reduce their likelihood of accidents, thereby minimizing the need for expensive repairs, claim payouts, and increased insurance premiums.

Some of the easiest ways for you or your drivers to practice safe driving include:

  • Be Wary of Blind Spots: Operating a reefer or tractor-trailer means driving high off of the ground, which can make visibility limited, especially in blind spots. To check your blind spot, look over your shoulder and out of your windows while changing lanes.
  • Be Ready for Emergencies on the Road: It's important for drivers to be ready for unexpected situations when driving, especially during long trips. They should be equipped to handle emergencies such as poor driving conditions or big rig breakdowns.
  • Use the Three-Second Rule: Truck drivers should try to maintain a three-second gap between their vehicle and the car in front of them. This means that the truck driver should reach a certain point on the road three seconds after the car in front of them has passed that same point.
  • Always Use Right and Left Turn Indicators: It's important for drivers to always use their turn signals when changing lanes or exiting highways, even if they don't see any other cars around. This is not only required by law, but it also reduces the chances of accidents occurring on the road.

Find Ways to Prevent Distracted Driving

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), distracted driving is the primary reason behind truck driver accidents. Any activity that takes a driver's attention away from the road or the steering wheel is considered distracted driving. Distractions can come in various forms, such as eating while driving or gazing at a billboard outside the window. However, the most frequent form of distracted driving is the use of cellphones, specifically texting while driving.

Assuming you or your driver's rigs are equipped with dual-facing cameras, try reviewing footage of an unsafe driving incident. Coach your drivers on ways to correct their unsafe behaviors or look up ways to do so yourself if you're the one operating the big rig. The bottom line is that when your drivers aren't distracted, they drive safer. And when they drive safer, the cost of 18-wheeler insurance in cityname, state can be reduced.

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The city of Winter Park is set to discuss the ban on gas-powered leaf blowers at a special meeting on Thursday.

In 2022, the city approved a ban on gas-powered leaf blowers by July 2024.

Danny Loeber is already ahead of the curve when it comes to the ban on gas-powered leaf blowers. His company, Mow Quiet, uses all-electric lawn care equipment including a lawnmower, hedge trimmer and of course, a leaf blower.

“My customers definitely enjoy the fact that they can work from home since so many people are working from home now,” Loeber said. “The noise that is caused by the leaf blowers in particular, and all the gas-powered equipment can drive people crazy. So I think that’s what has drawn people to my business.”

The city sent out a survey to landscapers and they tell us 95% were against the measure. Loeber said he’s not surprised by that number.

“It’s like 95% of them are using gas-powered stuff,” Loeber said. “So they’re going to take a big hit and it’s going to take them a little bit longer, potentially to do their yards if they have, like, the most powerful stuff. But I haven’t ever used gas, like I said, so it’s hard for me to say what the huge differences are, but I’m able to do all my stuff and I don’t even have the highest grade electric things that you can have.”

Even though Loeber’s business is already in compliance, he can understand the impact this would have on other companies using gas-powered equipment.

“I know there are a lot of people that are going to be struggling because of this but I can sympathize with them as well,” Loeber said.

The city tells us they made the change back in 2022 to reduce noise and air pollution. City officials will hold a special meeting on Thursday. Feb. 1, at 9 a.m. to discuss a 6-month extension on the July 2024 deadline.

Guy Fieri-backed restaurant owes more than $38K in overdue rent

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Nearly $40,000 in overdue rent could lead to the eviction of Guy Fieri-branded Chicken Guy! restaurant from its Winter Park location, according to court documents.

The owner of the property at 818 S. Orlando Ave., DKM Winter Park SNS, LLC., filed a complaint for commercial tenant eviction and damages on Tuesday.

The document lists the defendants as Chicken Guy, LLC; Earl of Sandwich, LLC; and Planet Hollywood, LLC — which all fall under the stewardship of hospitality magnate Robert Earl.

According to the complaint, the landlord entered into a lease with the defendants on Dec. 9, 2021, but on Feb. 15, 2024, DKM Winter Park SNS, LLC. issued a three-day notice to pay overdue rent.

Records show, another three-day notice was issued on March 4, which called for the defendants to pay rent or deliver possession of the property back to the landlord.

As of that date, more than $38,507 in past-due rent was owned, according to the complaint.

The complaint goes on to demand damages in excess of $50,000 which includes the overdue rent, future unpaid rent, accelerated rent, late charges, taxes/fines assessed against the landlord and attorney fees.

Strolling the colorful stalls of a farmers' market is one of the joys of the weekend. Practically every Orlando area neighborhood has its own weekly farmers' market, and it can be hard to decide which one is the best. As someone who grew up just 10 minutes away, I can say the Winter Park Farmers' Market is hard to beat.

Winter Park Farmers' Market Hours and Location

Every Saturday morning, from 8:00am – 1:00pm, the Winter Park Farmers' Market delights locals and visitors alike. Its new outdoor location is in Central Park West Meadow, located at the corner of New York Avenue & Morse Boulevard. Browse fine produce, plants, baked goods and so much more as the community gathers together each Saturday.

The Saturday Farmers’ Market is closed each year on the third Saturday in March due to the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, and typically the second Saturday in October for the Autumn Art Festival. It was previously held at the old train depot, a historical landmark, located at 200 W. New England Ave.

Note – there are no permanent restrooms at the Central Park West Meadow where the market is held. There are portable restrooms near the Winter Park Post Office.

The Winter Park Farmers' Market is dog-friendly! Bring along your doggo for some Saturday morning fun. You'll see all kinds of pups out and about at this popular community event. Just make sure your dog is on a leash and able to interact with other dogs properly.

Pet owners are asked to refrain from bringing their dogs into any crowded areas or crowded pathways.

Vendors and Stalls

There are over 50 vendors at the Winter Park Farmers' Market. Ranging from plants and fresh produce to gourmet foods and household items, there is a lot of browsing to do.

Here are some of the highlights:

And you can relax knowing that informational and/or promotional items, resale or flea market-type merchandise, and packaged, nationally-distributed foods or products, and overly-processed foods are not permitted at the Winter Park Farmers' Market.

Food at Winter Park Farmers' Market

During our visit we grabbed a fresh shaken lemonade from The Lemonade Stand, stationed near Morse Boulevard. The variety of flavored lemonades is akin to a candy shop. I selected the Pineapple Lemonade and it tasted like a drinkable lemon-pineapple lollypop. Definitely start here so you can stay cool as you stroll.

No need to fuel up before you arrive to the market. There are multiple food trucks and food vendors. Multiple coffee vendors are around if you need an extra pick me up on a Saturday morning – you're covered.

Kettle corn is a staple at any Orlando farmers' market and you'll find it near The Lemonade Stand. Stroll around with popcorn in hand! There is a small tent with a few high-top tables that make it easy to enjoy some fresh local food as you enjoy the market.

What to Bring

Dress comfortably so you can enjoy the fresh air. The market is entirely outside. The meadow is shaded in many places, still, this is Florida we're talking about here.

Bring bags! One canvas tote and one cooler bag should do the trick. The Shrimp Guy sells freshly caught seafood direct from Florida's waters. They have ice if you need it, but a cooler bag will be a big help and it is hard to resist such fresh seafood.

If you're going to make the most of the farmers' market experience then consider bringing a wagon. It will make carrying your local goods and unique items a lot easier.

Explore the rest of the markets around town with our Guide to Orlando Farmers Markets.Or plan a date night at home with a Visit to These Gourmet Markets in Orlando.

And of course, being located in the heart of Winter Park, you can enjoy a lovely afternoon on Park Avenue after a morning of browsing.

WINTER PARK, Fla. — The Winter Park City Commission has decided to temporarily waive fines imposed under the city’s new gas-powered leaf-blower ban. The ban goes into effect in July, but violators won’t face fines until January of next year.

What You Need To Know

Winter Park is attempting to transition residents to electric leaf blowers after they say they received complaints about the noise and environmental health impacts.

As a part of their ban on gas-powered leaf blowers in 2022, the city gave a 30-month grace period for residents and lawn care agencies to replace their equipment. Enforcement for the ordinance begins in July, however, city officials say violators will receive warning citations instead of fines until next year.

City leaders did note that the temporary hold on fines is subject to change, as the measure is simply a policy and not an adjustment of the ordinance.

Many lawn care agencies have expressed concern about the ordinance. Lawn care specialists say the alternative, electric leaf blowers, are more expensive and less effective.

“They’re going to need anywhere from eight to 16 batteries, and the unit itself costs $1,400 plus taxes,” said Brad Fournier, owner of KJ’s Engine Repair. “And then you’re going to spend another thousand of dollars on batteries.”

Fournier’s company repairs both electric and gas lawn care equipment for people across Central Florida, and he said sometimes broken electric leaf blowers have to be thrown out entirely, instead of their gas alternatives which can be repaired.

Lawn care agencies argue that electric leaf blowers don’t hold charge long enough, which would result in them having to buy multiple batteries to keep on hand in their trucks. Some companies with dozens of employees said at Thursday’s City Commission meeting that they expect to take on a cost of tens of thousands of dollars to buy all new electric equipment.

While city leaders say the electric leaf blowers are more quiet, lawn care workers say they are significantly less powerful.

“In all due honesty, (electric blowers are) great for a 10-15 minute job, but with commercial people, and trying to do landscape where they’re doing 10-12 yards a day, working eight to 12 hours a day ... they need to be able to go out there and take a 40 minute job and do it in 10 minutes,” said Fournier.

Lawn equipment across the United States produced more than 68,000 tons of nitrogen oxides in 2020, according to one report. The report also says the equipment produced 30 million tons of carbon dioxide.

It’s one of the reasons members of the City Commission say they chose to implement the ban. Otherwise, they said they’ve also faced complaints from residents about the noise of gas-powered equipment.

To assist with the cost of buying a new leaf blower, city commission approved a $50 rebate for households. To apply, head to cityofwinterpark.org/sustainability.
